Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

We posted a 2010 build thread on our forum.. has some great stuff on it. The last few days here have been quite, so I thought I would see what everyone's plans were during the off-season (if you race) or what plans you have for your street mini for 2010.

I'll start first.. My plans for the NSR/NSF are;

Takegawa 125cc kit (Stage 3) with stroked/lightened crank, super head, and roller cam, and a larger oil pump.
The Takegawa kit's intake is offset, so I've got to get a NSF off-set intake for a 28mm carb. Not sure what carb I'm going to go with, but looking at the thumper 28mm D slide carb.
Going to run an oil cooler set-up to keep the motor cool(er).
Going with a Jemco NSF100 exhaust
Since I'm going with a undertail exhaust, I cut off a bunch of stuff on the NSR subframe and welded on a hoop on the back that is going to hold the exhaust can. (still need to weld on the tab that the can will bolt to)
Got a new rear tail section, NSF one!
I sent my swing-arm out to get a new aluminum swingarm made for the bike to look like a RC211V swingarm! More importantly, it is going to have regular "big bike" chain adjusters on it!
Front forks are getting new oil and adjust the emulator kit a bit!
Getting the frame and swing-arm powercoated
With the rear brake, going to go away with the long reservoir and install a "tube" like the RS125's have.
Front brake is getting a SS brake line to complement the full-floating rotor that is on there.
Going to clean up my motor mounts a bit (got real dirty over the past 2yrs) and run my new spacers that I make for it now!

There might be a few things that I'm missing, but for the most part, that is what I've got planned or have already done. Here are a few pic's of where I'm at now..

Before the tare down..

Next is getting the larger oil pump and split the cases! I'm also going to remove the kick starter shaft/gear to save some weight!

Front fork with emulator kit, custom springs and modified damper rod..

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

Sweet. My YSR is getting a complete overhaul from the 150cc 4 stroke I had in it. It is a street machine and I want to keep up with my buddies on their 600cc's. I am installing my TZR250 Motor (+1.0MM Over-bored) with shortened and revalved CR85 Forks, custom lengthened and braced swingarm, custom lower engine cradle and front and read disc brakes. I just haven't decided which wheels, which calipers or disc rotors, and if Im going to go with a bigger shock or works/Fox/Ohlins YSR shock.

Hoping to be done by spring in time for riding season!!!

I'm still working on the YSR I bought months ago. I haven't ridden it since I test rode it once up and once back down a block before I bought it. Just need to paint the wheels, install the valve stems, and paint the tank. Oh yeah, I need a new clutch lever and cable. Just a matter of time though.

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

lol these ysr's are always a work in progress. Ive got 5 of them Im working on for the track next year.the two stockers with big bore kits are done and the two with xr100 motors are in the works now just not sure what motor pacs to put in them.I'm thinking the takegawa 115cc or 124cc in 1 and the 145cc se kit in the other.
the last one is the one with the yz80 motor in it. I have only rode this setup around the shop, so I could not tell much about it other than its a lot faster than the stock ysr motor.
we have a mini club here in Nashville that meets once a week and run parking lot races. We have no true track to call home, yet still having a blast together. So
I want these bikes to be built for a specific class, so we can run w/the OYL guys up north and semra down south.

I'm getting a Penske or Works shock for my Metrakit... a set of custom fork springs, and a billet triple with some offset to increase trail. Also hope to have somebody work with my bodywork. Motor seems plenty strong for F3. --L*64

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

I learn the 145cc kit is not the best kit for me, my buddie runs one on his crf80 motard and it is so so sweet I love it and I would love to build one, but I looked at the classes wrong and the 145cc kit would run in a class with 150r's and I just dont see that happening so it would be a lot of $$$ for a bike I would still be down in cc . looks like it will be cheeper to do both motors with the 115 or 124 than one with the 145. However the 145 kit is a bad a** motor one of the funest bike I've ridden. all its hyped up to be for sure.

Tony, RaceTech makes some sweet stuff for your suspension on the Metrakit... I'd suggest getting a gold valve emulator kit, and custom springs! That will help out a lot!

Kyle, you might want to re-check the thread you started on our forum... I've got more photo's over there then here..

Sounds like everyone has some cool builds/projects going... lets see and hear about more!

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

B-- I already talked tp Race Tech while I had them on the phone with a different project. IMO, the stuff they sell is expensive and kinda janky. I hate remote res shocks more than anything, the tree they sell looks like somebody made it in 9th grade shop class, and I've never heard anything good about an emulator kit in damping rod forks....

There's a guy at GMD Computrack in FLA that worked with this guys' metrakit suspension about 5 years ago, and I believe that he still has the specs for a Penske shock. I'll have him get a set of custom fork springs wound too. That guy that bought my stock Metrakit for his son, is supposed to help me out with a tree. If not, then I'll have Gary Emig cut one out for me I guess. I wanted about 10mm of offset or so, as the stock tree has zero. Should be a strong running F3 bike at that point. The motor has been bulletproof so far in its' current configuration. Also-- this Derbi motor has appeared in some kids' dirt bike here in the states, so I'm thinking that parts won't be an issue. I have two back up motors anyway. --L*64

You must know blackbirdxx22 then.I only remember his screen name. I was telling him about the track in Dublin Ga.Josh Herrin's family on it and it's a pretty sweet track. He had invited me down to come and race with you guys. But i thought if we were able to meet up at the Ga track it would be cool also.

She seems like she's gonna be a monster fireman 343.
I'm working on another well midbike build for next year myself. So far i got the rear shock a wanted. Then i got to get somemore tools i need to do some chassis mods.Motor will be dead last though still trying to decide.

Are you kidding me Tony?? I love my emulator kit and custom springs on my NSR, you can really tell my front end is planted a better by some of the pictures people have taken, plus I think Kyle said last year that he can tell my forks has some work done to them by the way it looked when going thru turn 1 at CRP. I don't know.. it has made a HUGE difference in my forks and I've got a lot more confidence in the front end now!

Either way, I didn't know that race tech's stuff for the Metrakit looked crappy.. what parts do they make for that thing out in Japan? I'm sure someone can get ya some sweet parts for it!

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

B-- I'd bet that it's the custom springs that make the difference. In the pit bike world-- it's common to run KX65 forks on a KLX110 (including my own mod 110). I've ridden my 110 with and without emulators in the forks, and I can't tell the difference either way. IMO-- you'd be better off having the damping rods modded by changing the size and or configuration of the oil flow holes, and oil height and weight.

I'm only going to spend a couple hundred dollars on my forks with the springs. As far as I know-- I'm not going to spend any money on the tree. If the forks still suck, I may have to ante up for the fully adjustable Paioli inverts that come on the new MK's. --L*64

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

Tony, if you look at my rod.. it has been modified for more oil flow, and larger/more holes were drilled for the emulator kit. That is part of the install.. you have to do that in order for them to work properly!

I can tell a night and day differance with the fork mods I've done, wish I would of done it sooner!

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

Brian-- I don't mean stock to modded, I mean modded without the emulators to modded with the emulators. When you go up in spring rate, the rebound is where the problem lies. The stiffer spring rates work the oil harder sucking it through the holes in the damping rods at a faster rate, shearing it and thinning it out more quickly. That's what we call shock fade. All spring, and no rebound damping. It all will vary in every situation. The emulators may make a difference on a road racer, but on a dirt bike where the suspension does a whole lot more-- the emulators didn't seem to make a difference.

They DO make a cartridge setup for KX65 forks that makes them work really well. You toss all the internals, and have the cartridge kits installed. Problem is that by the time you get it all done, you're in Marzocchi territory money wise.

I'll try and see how my MK forks perform after GMD works with them. I don't want to spend the money on the Paioli front end if I don't need to. --L*64

yes, blackbird is Hal a buddy of mine. The track in Ga looks sweet, you can tell He put a lot of time, effort, and money into it. I would like it make it to a rd. or 2 w/ semra at his track this season.
we are trying to put a sch. together for next year now, My plan is to make it around semra, oyl, and the mini mash.

As far as the trees for the Metrakit we have had no luck with adding more trail and adding anything more than 5* of offset causes an interference problem with the clipon's and body. So far the best mod we did to the front end geometry is switching to the right size tire (100/90/12). Made all the difference in the world. The bike handles like an NSR on a razor's edge and feels light as a feather but not to light........ just perfect. The added trail trees just made the bike steer like a school bus (slow and sloppy) and it also affected the bike negatively at full lean. It felt like it would push the front real easy.

Your best bet is getting the right size tire and the bike will handle like it was designed to........ awesome! Now I need to get 15HP out of this thing without breaking the bank or going to 72cc. Any help there?????

See Tony.. what have JR and I been telling you all these years?? Mount up some proper size tires as well as some TT92's and that bike will handle like a dream!

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

Hey Anthony-- If I could get a set of billet clamps made with the 5mm of off set, that would be great! Right now I can't even ride the bike because the bottom tree is cracked. Can you post a pic of what the tree looks like that you have already?

BTW-- you can adjust the steering stops on that bike so the bars won't hit the tank. I run my bars sorta straight across, so they won't hit on my bike. What about 10mm of offset with the lower tire that I run? What do you think that would do? About the power-- I'm running a full Pro50 motor with the PVL ignition, and the bike has about the same power as an SP72. At one time, I was running the PRO76 with a 28mm carb-- and it would come on the pipe mid turn and spin the tire while it was leaned over. It was kinda fun to ride, but dangerous. The Pro50 or the SP72 are the best configurations. I have Tyler Butts' 72 motor sitting in a crate still where I put it two years ago in my basement.

Brian-- Come on dude... you know I don't wanna check out anybodys' "rod"! Haha! I could leave the rear tire size, and go taller in the front. It never occurred to me that that would make any difference until Anthony Jr. mentioned it. I really didn't think the front was twitchy at all. The problems I have seem more like the suspension being all wrong. I'm on that-- but I need a tree, or I'm dead in the water. ---L*64

Re: Lets see everyone's 2010 builds? What is everyone doing during the off season?

This will be my winter project:
YSR braced frame with a 1987 XR100 or a 1986 YZ80, DT100 front forks, OHLINS rear shock and aluminium wheels, AIRTECH works fairings. I have the JLF engine mounting kit for the YZ80, I'll try to make a XR100 mounting kit using the YSR front rubber mounts. I have one question on the XR, can I upgrade the ignition system? the model I have has points & condenser, Does anybody make an electronic ignition for that year? something like MOTOPLAT or PVL.
