Legal-ish to ride my KLX110 on the road in CT?

Hey I just read they updated the laws in CT. it used to be a bike/scooter didnt have to be registered if it was over 50cc. now it says if the bike is less than 5HP and has a seat height of 26+ inches it is legal to drive on the road (excluding parkways and limited access highways)

stock seat height on the 05 KLX is listed at 25.6 inches. with my SDG tall seat, two bros extended swingarm and Ishock I should be over 26" no problem. now the BHP... whats the stock HP on a KLX aprox? the truth is that they dont know I have a 143 kit on it or anything else and i live in a small town. Im curious how far of a stretch, if it is, to say the KLX has 5hp or less.

here is from the CT DMV website

Quote:
MOTOR DRIVEN CYCLES: If you have a motor scooter, moped or motorbike having a motor that produces 5 brake horsepower or less (or 3.7 kW or less) and a seat height of at least 26 inches, you may operate it on the roadway without registering it. However, you must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license to operate it, and you may not operate it on any sidewalk, limited access highway or turnpike. If the maximum speed of your cycle is less than the speed limit of the road that you are on, you must operate in the right hand lane available for traffic or upon a usable shoulder on the right side of the road unless you are making a left turn. As of October 1, 2008, these vehicles are referred to as “motor driven cycles.”

I ride my C70 around all over the place and i live in storrs areas (by uconn), To boot my motor is a take 106 motor and goes easily 60+ miles an hour. Only problem i would say you would have is a 110 looks like a dirt bike, unless you deck it out with lights and signals i have a feeling the cops would give you a hard time. As it doesnt look like it should be on the road.

put the full set of laws on a note card in your wallet. Just in Case...
Get liability insurance on it. And lights. Scooters have a lights requirement too.
Like the previous poster. I have a ct70 with a tag. Fun for sure. Mine has a 125 in it and it will flat out haul past my wife's yamaha zuma. Fun stuff.

i think the cops will bust your chops on a 110.your going to need running lights too.give it a try.i drove my 50 around here with no lights cops told me just stay off the main streets.or take home.

There's just one problem I see. A KLX is designated as an off-road only bike so I'm not sure those laws apply to off-road bikes. You should look into this deeper before hitting the road.

Did you try getting insurance on the bike as a street vehicle. Even if you don't have to register it I'm sure you still have to insure it.

I guess the only way to delve deeper is to call your local DMV.

gotcha, well i know you dont need insurance on a moped/motor assisted bike, which is what this falls under
