Question for machinists

What would be the best way to mount a cylinder in a lathe?

I have a 50mm crank and a piston that doesn't match so I need to take 1-2mm off the bottom and I'm wondering what the best way to hold it would be?

Re: Question for machinists

i would use a faceplate. clamp the cylinder onto it using a long stud up thru the bore and an aluminum cap/plate over the end with a hole for the stud to come thru. slap on a washer and nut and you're good to go

That is exactly How I would go about doing it too. The only issue you may have after is issues with the Timing chain slack. I machined the bottom off a AHP boyesen pork you pine cylinder to work with a stock 50 crank and ran into issues with the timing chain adjustment. the 69mm long chain was way to long and the 63mm was to tight. Ended up having to make a custom cam gear worked great though haha. I think I shaved off some where around 4mm so 1 or 2 you should be ok.

yeah firepower mentioned the timing chain slack as well but said that with only 1-2mm as long as I have a new chain that I should be fine

Re: Question for machinists

how do you keep the bolt attached to the face plate centered in the cylinder?

yeah...id actually use a collet too. faceplate would work good too, collets your guaranteed to be in the center of the axis though (where I guess stud holes COULD be off to one side just a little..or if you tighten a nut they could walk a little or something, with a faceplate). They shouldnt but ya never know.
