You've got the hard part done already. You could spend that $100 on a truing stand or you could 'make' one yourself. Wheel Truing Jig Using Common Garage Items - ThumperTalk |

Take it to a bike shop that does ten speed race bikes and have them do it, cost me $20.00 per wheel.

Time is money, sound like the shop was quoting you around an hour to an hour and a half of a mechs time to sit at a bench and do the job. Based on observation, that's about right for truing two mini rims and getting them as close as you can. (Many of the available mini rims are not exactly 'round' and if you're starting with used rims it's even more difficult to get them right.) Myself, I'm not practiced with rims, so I let the shop do them.

How close is 'close enough'? I got my rear wheel completely straight, and within a 1/16'' of vertical run. (I think that's the right term?) Is that close enough or should I put it back on the stand? When you're doing them, just make sure you take baby steps. Going king kong with really screw things up and it will make the process take much longer. In this case - less is more. |
