| Broken Cylinder Stud...
Hey guys, I was out riding yesterday, went off a jump... and landed on a log. Guess we forgot to check to make sure the track was clear before we started riding. Anyways immediately after my bike started leaking oil out of the head and smoking pretty bad out of the exhaust, so I took it home last night and went to rip it down. Everything inside looked okay, except I realized I needed some new rings... However, after I saw that it looked okay, I went to tighten up the two bottom cylinder studs, and they were completely stripped out. Will I be able to order the two new studs (I know they're different sizes), and tighten them back up? It just looks like the studs completely lost their threads, so I'm hoping the holes in the case they screw in to aren't ruined too... Anyways what do you guys think? |

When you get new studs you may want to re-torque the head nuts after a few heat cycles. Since they are new they might stretch out a little when exposed to the heat and stress. That's all I can really think of though. Make sure you hone the cylinder so when you put new rings in they seal up good.

The studs are steel, the cases are aluminum. I highly doubt the studs were stripped. Check the cases out again. Helicoil might work.

Did the stud spin, or the nut pull the threads off the stud?

Well when I went to put the nuts back on after putting the head and everything back on after checking everything out, the two bottom studs just started spinning before I could get anywhere close to torqueing down the nuts. The bottoms of them, that go into the crank case, were completely stripped as if someone had sanded them down. I'm thinking the force of the impact on the cylinder just ripped them out, because I can't think of anything else. I always torque them down to 8ft lbs, and thats always worked out great for me. Looking at the holes in the case it looks as if they're okay, which was a surprise because like arlindsay said the case should of stripped or something before the studs.
