Flat slide vs. Round slide carb???

I have a couple different 24mm carbs that I am looking at purchasing. I know some of the newer big bikes run flat slide carbs. What are some of the biggest advantages or disadvantages of a flat slide carb vs. round slide?

flat slides are usually harder to tune, but make more power when tuned right.

Thats all i really know lol.

Yeah, I don't mind spending some time tuning the thing. I am just curious if one offers better perfomance than the other.

flatslide look cooler I actually dont know if there is a performance gain since the only time Ive converted to a flatslide I also went up in size, so I dont know what just going to a flatslide would do. but since basically all big bikes that are carbuerated use flatslides, there has to be a good reason.

Are there any 26mm flatslide carbs out there for the 50s?

Like classic honda only sells a 24mm flatslide

Mikuni has 24 and 28mm units, no 26's listed that I saw.

Why did they have to skip 26mm?

Flat slides are known to be higher performance because there is less area in the slide region of the carb. The air can get across the slide quicker allowing for increased air flow earlier.

flatsides will usually make more power at WOT but are a little trickier to get right at smaller throttle openings. A round slide will feel a bit smoother as far as power delivery goes but you will make more power with a flatside. If you're usually going full out and you're OK with a little jerkiness donw low (you might not even feel it) then go with the flatsides.

that's what I found on all my streetbikes anyway...

plus flatsides look way cooler and rattle at idle which sounds way cooler

yea thats pretty much what i was talking about with my first post.....

but using a stroke power band compared to a 4 strokes........

2 strokes power is at the top and the 4 strokes power is at low to mid....

thats kinda how this is, right?

2 stroke = flat slide
4 stroke = round slide

Depends entirely on the motor.

Build a way oversquare 4 stroke, big ports, overcarb it, and you'll have a mill that screams up top, has a bottom end thats useless, and a midrange that hurts to crawl up through.

Build a stroker two stroke, small carb, powervalve or equivilent in the exhaust, and you've got a bike with good bottom and mid but a lackluster finish up top.

In theory the flat slide should give better throttle response. The difficulty comes in sizing it, getting the right shape slide cutout, and needle profile. Most small flat slide 'performance' carbs have slides and needles geared for two stroke motors out of the box. Other slides and needles are available, but most people don't bother.

Some digging shows Dellorto makes a 26mm flatslide, the VHB series. Dunno who imports them in the states though.
