Thumbs down Look what I did today...

It was a fire-breathing motor, until today. Was racing my brother's Tak 124 S-Head and it went Kaboom. It's a TB117 with a BBR head, Inner Rotor Kit, and a Tak C/R 3 Speed Trans and Manual Clutch. Thankfully the trans and clutch are still good. The crank is possibly still good. The top end is history. Have no clue what caused it. I was about 3/4 throttle. Wasn't running lean at all. Just went pow. The exhaust valve is broken off. The valve stem is seized in the guide. Piston completely toast. See for yourself...

When I pulled the head off, I like how the piston is turned completely upside down.

The head when I pulled it off

The cylinder sleeve...

And the sweet looking piston...

Anyone have an idea what caused all of this? It's been ran about 2 hours.

In the words of somebody of no particular significance once said on here...

"...that'll buff out..."

Just out of curiosity, what would that little gear be, peeking out of the cases, alongside the piston remnants ?

I don't know. The only gear that looks similar is the Top cam chain gear, I think. Couldn't be that, though.

Looks like the other half of the oil ring folded up.

Re: Look what I did today...

It dont look good. Might of been running too lean. Or just over revving and you floated the valve.

Re: Look what I did today...

Are you running an oil cooler? Looks like you dropped your exhaust valve and the rest is history. Post up pictures of your camshaft please.

Re: Look what I did today...

Must be the other part of the oil ring. Don't think it was running lean because the plug was nice and "mocha" brown. Not running an oil cooler. Was riding for about 5 min in 40 degree weather before it blew. I don't think it could of heated up that fast. I'll get better pics of everything in the morning.

Re: Look what I did today...

I wouldn't use that rod unless you got it checked out. It might look ok, but looking ok and being within spec is totally different.

Re: Look what I did today...

I doubt I'll use it. I have a brand new crank, so I'll put it in to be safe. Also have a TB Race Head I'll use. Just need a new piston and cylinder, which I'm sure I could get from Terry. Kinda want to figure out what went wrong, so it doesn't happen again.

Re: Look what I did today...

One more thing I noticed when I took apart the motor is that the cam chain was very loose. However, the motor was NOT making any abnormal noises while riding.
