Mikuni help needed

sorry im starting a new thread on this, i wanted to start over so there wasnt any confusion or any of that

ive got a 26mm mikuni carb (24 4852 stamped on the side) on my tb108 motor.

it leaks gas while riding it, I know someone else said theirs did too, but id like to get it fixed if possible. I checked the float needle, it seems like its sealing good (blew through fuel inlet line), FLOAT HEIGHT IS CORRECT, you guys think i need to go ahead and buy a float needle/seat or what? float needle is not wore at all, not even indication of a mark on the taper

Im pretty sure this is a mikuni for a 2 stroke, if so, anyone think thats why its leaking gas?? or anyone know where to find a jet kit or something specifically for this carb (instead of measuring how big they are..unless thats what you have to do)?? (as compared to a mikuni vm26 606 4stroke carb)

also, runs GREAT on the top end, runs like poop if youre just cruising, riding wheelies, etc and mash it (so im guessing pilot). my pilot has no number on it (its a short one, not a long type)

needle is 4LT28, set on top clip
fuel air screw tried to adjust, it can be alll the way in and still run though (this mean too rich on pilot??)
main jet is a 95 (unless thats upside down, then a 56 lol)
theres some jet in the bowl portion, A 15

thanks for any input in advance

Re: Mikuni help needed

I had the leaky vm26 but it was the 606 style...anyhow I suggested you check that your petcock is sealing in the off position, I had one that was leaking due to the rubber seal was worn...I've also seen them with some sort of crap in there that let the fuel pass by...hope that helps

Re: Mikuni help needed

I would try bending the floats needle seat arm...so the float shuts alittle quicker just to see if it helps.

When you say leaking, like through the drain tube on the carb?

Re: Mikuni help needed

sorry about that guys..
squidwell, it seals in the "off" position, once the bowl drains out lol. seems to mainly only do it when i ride. i cleaned everything imaginable in there, nothing different...

blackwoodz, i actually took it to my friends dad today (motorcycle mechanic for like 30 something years), he messed with that a little, still leaks when riding.

infinatereality, sorry i wasnt more clear, its leaking, well.. more running haha (dripps out of there pretty darn fast when riding), out of the bowl overflow. I checked the bowl drain it seems to be sealing and drain screw doesnt seem to be damaged. However i did notice there were a few drips out of the upper overflow i guess on the carb too, this could be from the other drain hose, too, since they lay side by side at the ends by my skid plate. guess ill have to go take a night ride and check for sure

Re: Mikuni help needed

anyone have any more ideas?? think i should buy a float needle/seat kit?? i really hate to, like i said theres no wear, or no indication the needle is wore at all, just dont know why else it would be leaking float height and all is set correct...im stumped

Re: Mikuni help needed

I've got the same problem!

I have the same carb (VM26 606 style) and a vented carb catch can, during my ride today my catch can would fill up from the hose that comes out of the side of the carb and only trickles some fuel from the carb bowl.

i'm in the same boat as you bro!!

Re: Mikuni help needed

I took mine down to my local mx shop today, and the mechanic took a look at my carb.. pulled it apart and all. I was having the same problem as you. He couldn't find anything wrong with it, and said it was probably because I was getting too much gas from my tank into my carb. He also said that because the vm26 was made for larger engines that have longer gear ratios, which mean you spend more time in the mid range and upper rpms, that the carb doesn't get the chance to use up the gas as fast as it should be. Because the 50's have such short gear ratios, were not really ripping through gears and revving them out like you would on say, a cr150f. I guess since were spending less time revving it up to get through 5 gears like you would on a big bike, the carb just doesn't have the chance to shoot the gas through like it would on a larger bike.

He said for me to just let it be, and not to mess with the floats because I would probably end up damaging the needle or something. I know this doesn't solve your problem, but thought I'd let you know what a professional said after taking a good look at mine

Re: Mikuni help needed

thanks a lot trd. like i said, i brought mine to the local mechanic in town, 30+ yrs experience, he was stumped too..
makes sense, just seemed weird so many people have this carb and this is the first ive heard about it. wonder if somehow you could run a smaller fuel line to the carb?? or what that would do for it

26mm carb is too big for anything below 124cc, might be ok on a 117cc but never had that combo
some supermoto racers have luck with 26mm carbs on 106cc bike cos there running in the higher rev range, if your riding dirt your gonna be on and off the throttle so jetting is more critical
24mm carb works best
as for the fuel dripping out the over flow its more likely that your pilot jet is too big

hope this helps and you get it sorted
jetting sucks lol

jetting does suck, thats for sure haha

that's just kind of weird though, i wonder why TB includes the VM26 in their 108 stroker kit then?? I'm not doubting you it might be too big, just saying..

Re: Mikuni help needed

I think a reason why my mikunis leaking might be because of stripped threads where the bowl attaches to the top end??

the threads for the 4 screws that hold your bowl on are stripped??

you could fix that by just getting a longer screw, and putting a nut on the other end. the screws come out, or are visible on the other side so it doesn't hurt if a nut is sticking out
