Re: Porting my head...

If you don't know what you're doing, it will actually reduce performance.

If you learned by going to youtube, and typing "engine porting", then you better drop the dremel or die grinder IMMEDIATELY.

Go to a junkyard and buy a set of old cast iron heads to practice on, then move up to some old aluminum heads. It takes quite a bit of practice to become good at porting and polishing a head.

Hey Dave I watched that video and thought it was pretty much common sense(for anyone that took autoshop in HS) or I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones, although I should have paid more attention in applied business principles.....I seem to just give stuff away.......

Just start off a little at a time, like disco said sometimes you can do more harm than good.....I start with cutters first, then stones and then fine sanding drums.......I have never polished a head just porting to a smooth feel....

Re: Porting my head...

As Scott mentioned, start out with a carbide type bit. Once you chew away the bulk of the metal, then move to a sander or grinding stone.

Try to stay away from doing sharp angles, and go more with a smooth curve. Spend some time on the internet or a speed shop, and try to get some tips from the pros.

Re: Porting my head...

All that I have done with my heads off my bikes is clean up the castings it seems to work good. ive done a 400ex, my superhead for my 50, and soon to do my crf450 head. It seems to help out alot just cleaning the castings/flaws in the head. Also to afraid to grind too much out and hurting my performance.
