1979 atc w/ lifan 125?

Okay so I renently picked up a 1979 atc70, the motor is the 3spd( ) and isn't running. I want to hop it up, but then I found a 125 4spd semi auto for $150 which may be a cheaper alternative. I am also going to be doing some major cosmetic work on the little fella also. Will the motor work okay even though its a kick start? Any other ideas on some tricks with ideas on exhaust? Any help would be much appreciated.

The motor will bolt right up, you may need to modify the bolt holes for the intake to tuck it under the tank better, about any pit bike pipe will bolt up with very liitle mods. Dr atv has a kit to put a pull starter back on motors like that but I have never used it, check out mad 70s on 3ww thats my freinds and I

I just wonder if the 125 will clear the front fender. it is a 6 volt to 12 volt cdi change over. I saw the pull start conversion at dratv, pretty cool.

ADD YOUR ATC70 PULLSTART TO A NEW LIFAN KICK ONLY ENGINE (KIT) (eta_8_1_09)

Couldn't I just keep the kick start? Basically I would like to throw this motor in and keep the rest looking stock minus motor and exhaust. I looked for the pull start for my 70 motor and it would be the same price as the lifan motor.

I think the kick starter would interfere with the back fender.

The kicker won't work with the back fenders without hacking a big hole or putting the whole rear on some sort of hinge, I just put mine in gear and give them a push, as for the front fender it may just clear if your frame is not bent back, most of us trim off the bottom or take it off all together, we use oil coolers and then the fender is in the way

If the frame is bent that is an easy fix. The kicker will hit so you need to do a pull start conversion from Dr ATV or make your own but you need to find a TRX70 side cover (THERY ARE NOT EASY TO FIND). That is why alot of people (like me ) went with electric start motors, plus I am getting lazy in my old age, lol.

Why can't you use the ATC70 cover?

Re: 1979 atc w/ lifan 125?

The newer "clone" motors and the TRX70's use a CDI ignition compared to the points on the ATC70s, The pick up coil is mounted on the lower rear of the stator plate and the ATC cover does not have a recess for the pick up but the TRX does, but DR ATVs kit shows how to grind an opening to fit on the CDI Motor. ALso the TRX has the timing cap on the top but ATC does not, not really a big deal.

Thanks for the info. So with the trx cover do you have to remove material?
