Picked up a 82 trx70 off of craigs for $100. Cleaned out the carb and replaced the fuel filter that was on it and got it running. Smoked a bit when it started then ran really well. Went to start it the next day and it would not start. Checked for spark and there was none. Bought two new spark plugs. installed one today and it fired right up. Rode it around for about ten minutes or so. Parked it and when I came back out it wouldn't start. Put another plug in and it fored right up. But then the same thing happened after I parked it. Any ideas??????

Honda only made the TRX70 in '86 and '87...

Make sure your plug boot is threaded all the way on the coil wire. It might also need to be cut back a 1/4" and reinstall the boot for a good connection.

sorry it's the foutrax 70. It might be an 83. Here's what I'm currently dealing with. I've gotten it started after it sits for about two hours. It has a very low idol and adjusting the screws on the carb seem to do very little. I took the air breather off (it's a generic K&N) and with no air breather it runs extremely well. Smells like some gas is passing through the exhaust though. Spark plugs are a little black after a run. I'm thinking the carb is jacked and letting too much gas in or not enough and throwing off the mixture. Anyways, when I do get it to start with the airbreather on it has a very low idol and needs to have the throttle all the way down just to stay running, also with both carb screws tightened all the way in. Any ideas?

so what is the deal???? Basically, I believe the guy I bought this from didn't know his head from his %^&! TRX 70's weren't made until 85 right? He told me it was an 82 or 83....he didn't really know. How do I tell what year it is? Serial numbers? Website etc? I have some pics as well. My son had a blast putting stickers all over it. Well let me know if you can help? Appreciate it!

Just behind the shift shaft and below the front sprocket is the engine serial number, post all the letters and digits up and we can tell you whether or not it is a TRX70 engine and what year it is. Depending upon that outcome, it might even be an ATC70 engine. As I said above, Honda made the TRX70 FourTrax only in '86 and '87.
Take some more pictures of it without all the plastics and seat on it.

Hey thanks very much for the responses here in the forum. I've posted on a few other forums with little to no responses at all. You guys are great!
The numbers behing the shifter shaft are as follows.

The I's might be lower case L's....or 1's?????

Anyways, I've pretty much figured out that the carb ont his thing is screwed beyond repair, but definitely need to know which one to buy. So of course knowing whether the engine is off of an ATC or TRX is key. Thanks for all of your help and I will be checking back quite often.

I just put a brand new Honda carb from dratv $111 for my atc70 (well worth it). Made a huge difference. Check dratv link. trx and atc use same carbs.
