2 new 70s

So im not new to 70s but i havent had one in a few years. Just got 2 locally for only $300 and they were both 99% complete. Each had a couple missing parts but no biggie. One (the 82) is complete and we got it running but it runs horrible. It will start up, smoke horribly (white smoke) and if i hit the gas itll just bog down. But it will idle forever, it sounds horrible though. The 84/85 is missing a coil and has flat tires. Both have horribly rusted tanks. But i ordered carb rebuild kits and have those 45 degree incline filters but i wanna get em running good before.
All jets are super clean and spotless.
Any ideas?
Floats are measured correctly and points and valves are correct.....
Thanks

Make sure all the carb orifices are clean. Swap the carbs out, adjust the valves, put the coil on the other bike an try it.

I would fix the rusty tank problem first or the rust will get into your carb and plug everything up.

Re: 2 new 70s

if the gas as been sittin it will make anything run like crap if you drain the fuel and the inside of the tank is rusted get a new tank if you refill it with new gas it will do the same thing
with the ****ty gas it may run but it most likely will bog down when there is more gas going into the motor
the white smoke could be that the rings are starting to go out and it is burning some oil with the gas or a valve is out of wack

Re: 2 new 70s

points, condencer, and fresh gas, for a smoker I would put a little Lucas oil treatment in with the crank case oil [25% to 50 %] those little motors are tuff , the Lucas seems to loosen up the rings after it in there a while

Re: 2 new 70s

Gas of course, but check your intake gaskets for vacuum leaks. if air is getting in before the air/fuel mix you are gonna have problems. Do a compression test too. Rings are probably done if its burning oil. Adjust valves too as said above.
