new to ATC 70s

I just bought a 1982 atc 70. Been riding it a lot, but I was wondering if a twist throttle would be a little better than the stock thumb throttle. If i do get one, will the throttle tube from a 50 work if everything else on the bike is stock?

Re: new to ATC 70s

I actually prefer the thumb throttle on the ATC. When you get out in the muck or snow and you are drifting the ATC, it's actually easier to modulate the throttle with the thumb then trying to hang on with a twist throttle.

It's all a matter of personal preference. If you like a twist throttle better, remove the thumb setup (send me pics as I may want to purchase yours) and install the twist throttle with a kill switch (Most late model Z50R's have these)..

Will a Trailbikes billet throttle work with the stock throttle cable? I haven't had time to really explore the carb or throttle aparatus. And if I do put a twist throttle on it, I'll PM you some pics.

You'll need a new throttle cable and will probably have to cut down the cable to make it work. The ATC inner throttle cable is really long compared to other cables I've seen. I'm going to run the stock cable with a 20mm carb and am having to cut down the inner cable and soldier on a new cable end.

Stick with the thumb!

Re: new to ATC 70s

Z, thanks for the input. For now I'll stick with the thumb. So far, the wheeler has been great. I'm guessing I got it so cheap because the points were somewhat sticky. It would run for about 15 minutes, then slowly loose power until it would shut off. I checked spark, there was nothing, so I checked the points. I sprayed a little silicon lube in there for now is it a lot of work to change points? I know about them, but have never tried to replace them.

Same points setup as a Z50/CT70 6V motor. Post those questions in the Z50 forums and you'll get more responses.

You'll need a flywheel puller and a soldiering iron. Not difficult.

Pick yourself up a Clymer manual for replacing and setting the points.

I hate thumb throttle. I don't know much about what would and wouldn't work on an ATC. You can pickup an XR80 (keihin) carb, throttle cable, and throttle assembly on ebay for pretty cheap, but you would still need an intake and an external petcock. It would make a nice big carb setup with a twist throttle.
