Lookin at picking this one up for my son. He raced the National on his Pitster X2 and got 4th...time to step up the game. Good, bad and the ugly on KTM's please. Motor is done and fresh, suspension is worked by RaceTech Getting a good price. |

IMO-- the KTM65 has the best motor of all for road racing. (Besides the Derbi motor that's in my Metrakit). Another good thing about it is that it can be run in a 50cc configuration that will spank the crap out of the 50cc competition. I was half thinking about running that setup in my bike. It would be very easy to get it into the Metrakit chassis. I say go for it. --L*64

I just picked up a KTM65SX as well. Bike was setup, built tuff, etc... for moto- therefore starting from scratch to build motard. The suspension was "worked" for a 90lb rider, although I am more like 180. As soon as i can get some 12" rubber on bike will address suspension. Plan to remove bars, add clip ons, and drop tubes in front. For now, I am most interested in wheels/brakes. Currently there are stock calipers and wave rotors (unknown type). Are these brakes sufficient for street race? I was thinking of upgrade to a galfer rotor/pad setup if needed. or do I need BIGGER? That said, I am considering both a complete wheel set and/or simply using the stock rotors that are in the moto 12"/14" wheels. Which is best- having a duplicate set of "bolt on" wheels/brakes/sprockets or using the stock hubs, buying rims/spokes/tubes/tires and knowing my brakes/sprockets will fit? Reason I am concerned is that moving to a complete wheel "kit" on KTM may cause brake/sprocket fitment issues? Has anyone done this and have notes/parts? I have also heard of swingarm clearance issues on the KTM65? Will 12" wheels and Dunlop TT92 fit? Long story short, I am rookie racer (not even yet) but want the dope setup. How much attention do I NEED to pay to reworked suspension, wheel fitment, gearing, etc... Any gearing ideas for KTM65? that is next after i figure the wheels out. |

I've heard there have been a lot of problems with the new redesigned 09's but I've never read anything bad about the 08 and older bikes.
