| KTM65SX Rear Brake Upgrade
I just picked up a 2003 KTM65 and I noticed that the rear brake rotor will heat up and the brakes will stop working after about 3 minutes of riding. Would a warped rotor do this? Or is it just the extra weight on the bike? I weigh 160 and I'm not using the brakes constantly. The 2003 and older rotor has a just a few holes where as the 2004-up rotor has a lot more holes.

Yeah-- a bent rotor could do that, or check and make sure that you aren't running brake pads that are roached and putting the backing plate to the rotor on the back of the disc where you can't see easily. One more thing to check is the brake carrier. I've seen them bend in a crash before, and then the rotor isn't passing through the pads straight, rubbing on them and heating up. Hope this helps. are you using this as a pit bike? BTW-- post a bigger pic of your avatar. That bike looks like BBR Ryans' XR. --L*64 |

The pads and caliper mount are fine. I adjusted the chain and it doesn't do it anymore. I think the previous owner had the rear wheel misaligned. And it's not 95 degrees out anymore so I think that had an effect also. I'll probably put a newer rotor on there anyways, more holes in it for better cooling. Yes, I'm using it as a pitbike. So far it has been great! Very fun. I'm used to riding CRF100's and 80's so this is a bit different. It needs heavier springs though. Any suggestions as far as spring rates for a 165 lb aggressive rider? I'll be mainly using it for smaller motocross tracks and a little trail riding. The bike in my avatar is something I photochopped up. Sorry, don't have a bigger pic. |

Sounds pretty good. I figured the brake problem had to do with alignment of the caliper. As for the spring rates-- I'd go with 6.4 out back, and .38 up front if they make that spring rate for the 'Zokes'. I say 6.4 out back because the KTM doesn't have the linkage to make the rear feel progressive. Check with Cannon Racecraft to see what they have. ---L*64 |
