| Training Wheels---DIY for $20
After getting nauseated at the thot of paying $150 for a set of heavy-duty training wheels for my kids' PW50, I made my own on Sat in 15mins. I already had an old bike innertube, and two well-made 8" plastic wheels (taken off of a NAPA battery cart), so I went to Ace Hdwr and bot: I. 36"x0.5" dia. steel axle/rod II. Four collars for the bar III. Two 2"x0.25" U-bolts (Double-check the size by ensuring that it will fit over TWO pieces of item #I. This represents the PW50 frame and the axle.) IV. Lock washers for III. V. Four Big washers for the axle/wheels junctions. On the belly of the PW50, find where the two frame down-tubes are welded onto the frame crosspiece. At this junction, the downtubes are pinched, forming two "valleys". Wrap these valleys with one turn of old innertube. Slide the U-bolts over this wrap to hold the wrap in place. Mount the axle here. Assemble the wheels with a dab of grease, remembering to allow a hair of play between the wheels and collars/washers. Step back and get out the Flip camera! |
