Finished the engine build on my second 85 (tb parts head, big bore, stroker crank, etc). Trying to run a Mikuni VM20 on the TB parts intake doesn't work because the choke button hits the tank. I am going to try the oem intake this weekend;I think this might work because it should tuck the carb under the tank more rather then angling it out. There is also the intake on ebay for the lifan. Anyone run into this and know which one works? Thanks for any help!

I had the same problem with my 150cc engine and the choke knob on my Mikuni VM26 carb hitting the bottom of the tank. Lots of little options to gain more clearance for your VM20.

I can still run a black heat spacer but I did however machine/sand it down about 2-3mm thinner for carb to gas tank clearance. I also thinned down the bottom intake manifold flange 1.5 - 2 mm thinner on a belt sander to lower the carb even more. Another option is to remove the black phenolic spacer all together and run one or two intake gaskets to lower the carb further. I ended up going this route and have not had any heat problems running the engine hard on the sand dunes in the summer heat.

However soon the carb bottom might come in contact with the engine cooling fins and they may need to be trimmed a little.

You can also slot the intake manifold bolt holes and rotate the carb closer to frame to gain under tank clearance a little. All of these tricks should give you the space you need for choke pull clearance.

Wish I had a better carb photo but you can see the knob clears the gas tank even with the large VM26 Mikuni.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. Awesome bike btw!

I ordered a rotating spacer from TB Parts that they say will allow me to rotate the intake: TBParts - 12 Way Rotating spacer 20mm - TBW0900 - Carb Intakes - Pit Bike Engine Parts - TBolt USA, LLC.

I worry about the added height of the spacer but I figure for $14 might as well have the option.

Between the spacer and your ideas, I should be able to make it work.

I've been looking for one of those for my 82. However, that one has the ridges on the side. What year did they switch to those?

Looks like they went to the ridged ones in '81. If you go here and enter the part number in the Search By Part Number box, it will tell you which years it was used. You'll just have to click on where used

Going off the brochure, it looks flat with no ridges. I always thought the ridged fender started in 1985 but I could be wrong.
