bike recommendation needed
Well let me start with the progression of things here, my buddy and I are both adult riders that have been one upping performance of our pitties over the last couple of seasons. Him on a ttr-110 and me on my klx110. He has now gone out and purchased a crf150rb and totally wicked up the performance ante on me. There is no way to hang with him on the 110. I cannot see spending the dollars for a crf150rb to fight fire with fire so I am thinking a 85 or 100 size two stroker. What bike do you recommend fighting him with. I know the little things I will need to change to fit the bike, springs, bars etc. but what can run with him. He weights about 50-60 pounds more than me I suppose. We ride a sandy/loamy track with smaller jumps and a few tight sections. Help steer me in a direction for a good reliable performer that does not have a history of problems.
Thanks for helping the battle guys!

I have a KX100 and a 150R myself. On bigger tracks, the KX will keep up with or pull on a 150R. On tight tracks-- there really isn't a match for a 150R. The power is pretty broad. I've seen super sweet 150R's in the $1800 range.
I'd just tell him the deal. Tell him to keep his 110 so you guys can still race against each other. --L*64

I like a kx100 myself. With a little work I think a kx would put it on a 150r on an open track. Being 60lbs less you might could take him on a tighter track? Depends who's the better rider.

Appreciate the input guys. Yeah we are keeping the 110's for sure. No one mentioned YZ 85's, thats to bad cause there are a couple real nice used ones local. I may just have to shop for a used 150rb I guess. I have seen KX100's but most would need a real good freshen up. My only concern with a used 150 is the head/valves and not knowing the maintainace done. This is all for fun and braggin rights, I cant tell you how much fun I have had on the pitbikes. Way more hours on the little ones than the big bikes lately.

Yep. Me too. I always want to go back to big bikes, but then I have to remember why I stopped riding and racing big bikes to begin with. I have more fun on my trail bikes (150F's) on pit bike tracksm than I ever did on 125's. Problem is that I live in a place where we have a few sweet big bike tracks. That's what makes me want to swoop up another 125 so I can ride those tracks. We'll see how it goes I guess.
As long as the 150R starts easily, and runs well-- it should be OK. If you look at the overall condition of the bike, and it's nice. Chances are that the maintainence was done on the engine. I only ride my own 150R a few hours per year on big bike tracks, so my motor will last a really long time. I was thinking about lowering the compression slightly with a thicker head gasket, running a milder cam, and weighting the flywheel in order to tame it down slightly so I can ride it on trails some, and make it feel more like a pit bike than an all out racer.
A YZ85 oesn't have a powervalve-- so it would be harder to ride than a KX100. ---L*64

Found a decent 2006 KTM 105....we will see how big of a lesson I purchased once I bet a couple rides on it. Thanks guys!

Thats what I ride now- a 2009 ktm 105. I put heavier fork springs and rear shock springs in it.
It goes real good, I love it so far.
I sold a modded klx110 that I had ridden for about 3 years, I was just tired of riding something so small, for me the 105 katoom fits really well
however, I am 5'6" and about 165 lbs. s
