    Re: xr 80 head testing

I've been wondering about roller bearing conversion options... I Considered purchasing a Takegawa stage 3 and line boring the head and holder. IMO +$200 cam really isn't a attractive up grade for the stock head.

Looks like the inexpensive Lifan "short" performance cam could be an alliterative option?? You would happen to have one laying around for a comparison pic/dimensions?

We used to make 1/2 spacers like that to run smaller mains in BB-Olds race engines, at Batten. Worked fine.

I dare you to JB Weld a grooved-up one and see how long it lives

Cam far end can be turned down like the DrATV 6v50/70 cam, but the drive end will need more work.

I've been amazed at what JB Weld can do. Have you ever seen this done?

    Re: xr 80 head testing

A few months ago I started playing around some 3D cad models of a retro fit cam holder. Similar idea to the first gen XR 75's- But a two piece design based on the late model stock XR's holder. However, it would require to mill .250-315" of the holders foot print... I might send a STL file off to a 3D printing service for a prototype. I also have a few cooked heads, including a Take SH.

Needs a little refining- its close tho

Yup, I agree! It's more or less exploring a brain storm... Unsure of the cost to manufacture, I haven't tried to pursue the project. Maybe someone with a T&M CNC shop will chime in. However, really only the lower half is needed- if the precision is there...

I was hot on that Lifan cam idea a while back- Unfortunately, I have a hard time piss'n $50 now a days..

Did you come across a cam in your stock?

    Re: xr 80 head testing

I would like to say lean towards the split bearing for the stock cam. Only cuz what you stated above about performance cams options for the 80/100's. (Unfortunately, If the heads cooked so is the cam) But before ya know it- cam repair labor + Bearings + performance/cam replacement= $$$...

What I liked about the Lifan cam- was (a little) added performance (as was as the needed replacement for most users) and bearings at $35 from DRatv. I'm unaware of other performance cams on the market for Lifan engine line- specs and cost. Re drilling a 100 cam shouldn't a big issue for us 100 guys cost wise

$$ most always drive a product and service...

It will be intresting to hear what others have to say- forsure

Can't wait to see the project underway wichever path you choose

    Both!

Bearing set for the guy who just wants to lump it together; Lifan short cam & sprocket for the guy who's going to tear down & rebuild. Around here a new head w valves goes for $350 from Honda. Hell of a way to spend money on an engine full of metal debris.

Ya, It's to bad the stud spacing is offset lil, and there really isn't large lump available for the gen 1 XR 75. Was looking a the old fifty performance cams for a retro fit in the 75's holder... Man- I/we all must have some freak XR upright sickness- your mutant motor is a air born infection!!! Thanks alot! lol
