I have an xr 80 that i got for my girlfriend to learn on. She has been on it for a year and it is not fast enough for her anymore but the size is perfect. It is for sale right now but if I can find an engine that will fit I'll keep it. Are there any larger Chinese engines that I could put on it that wouldn't require alot of work?

A 100 top end would be good and then a 120 big bore kit from Bbr really wakes up the engine
-
You will need a 100 motor
-
Will the 100 top end not swap on the 80?
-
The bbr kit alone is almost 300 dollars though I can get a 160 piranha motor for 100 dollars more. I was really just looking to get a newer motor that will fit without much fab work. If there aren't any I'll probably just sell the bike and get her a pitbike that has 14/12 wheels and better suspension anyhow.

Minimum investment to get an XR80 over 10 BHp;
BBK $289
Carb $75 to 200
Exhaust $170
Cam $100
and a days worth of messing around on the install and tune.
or kick and go 10 BHp China 160 for $400.
Hmm... what to do.

there is a ching chong 200cc motor that drops in them i don't remember where i found them or the name of them.

Pretty sure those china motors are push rod, that's a bad combo, china and pushrod lol

same stud patteren as the 80 but the 100 has taller cylinder and oil passage is located further out from the case bore than the 80. so yes they will swap but not without work.

lol that would be the one i'm talking about. its china what can you expect
-
I would build the 80 motor 10 times before I'd buy the china motor

Has anyone seen any actual evidence of the China pushrod uprights coming apart or otherwise crapping out?
I ask because I'm thinking those started out as clones of a Honda CG125 engine, which looks kind of like a SL125 motor but with the cam down by the cylinder base and with pushrods/rockers. Never sold over here, but sold by the fwillions in England and many other countries as cheap commuter streetbikes, kind of like our CB125 but not OHC. I believe I've read that they're rated at about 10-11 hp and can zing up past 11,000 rpm without coming apart.
Maybe by the time you up the displacement toward 200cc and if the Chinese metallurgy is worse, maybe they aren't so hot, but man, if you could fit an understressed 200cc motor in a XR80--even with pushrods--and had the right spread of ratios, I'd think that could be short-shifting woods-riding heaven.

I've never tried one, but I did see one in a hardknock bobber, not sure if it was the same china pushrod engine but the dang thing ran like a Harley ( could barely stay at idle and stumbled through the gears) and the shifting seemed very notchy just by watching the guy ride it
To each their own but I'd go with a Honda any day of the week

the ol school pushrod design isn't what would concern me. just look at all the old american muscle. my concerns would be w/ chinese metallurgy. maybe its just my luck but every single chinese motor i have owned this is how it goes everytime. in stock form not to bad and last pretty fair. but i'm not happy w/ the power curve of stock form nor what it puts down for tq and hp. as soon as i start getting it where i like first thing to start screwing up clutch, followed by tranny everytime. its a 50/50 chance if the crank will hold or have some kinda of case problem.

The thing is a stock 150 or 160 china motor would be plenty of power for her compared to a stock xr80 powerplant and I don't have another 500 or 600 to put into a motor when I could sell it and buy something with better suspension for her it just doesn't make sense to me.

The Chinese motors are suprisingly reliable and durable, and have an argueably bigger catalog of aftermarket than the Honda mini's. Granted the complete bikes are less than stellar out of the box, mostly due to crap hardware and plastics. Here in the SE there's one racing org(www.semra.org) that runs two spec classes on the Thumpstar Mini's, straight from China. Those bikes get beat on for a couple of seasons before needing even a top end. The concerns over Chinese engines is mostly unfounded IMO.
