CRF50 Issues
Hey everyone so I got a 2006 Honda CRF50F from a friend recently and im working on trying to get it running. He said the bike was running but it has been sitting for about a year since he has not used it so it wont start, so yesterday i took off the carb and found some nasty dried up fuel in the bowl. I cleaned the carb up and all the ports then re-installed it I also took the air box off and opened it and cleaned that out since it had some oil in it from not being up right the whole time and the filter was just full of oil so i got rid of that.
I re installed all of it last night except for putting a new air filter in it since i didnt have one at the moment and it started on the first kick with the choke on after about 10-20 the motor sounded like it revved real high then it turned off and now wont kick back over. anyone know what the issue might be? would not having a air filter in box effect this and cause this? also What is the stock size for the carb on this bike so i know for future reference?
Thanks

does it have gas? just a thought and the stock carb is 13mm
-
Off the top of my head the stock 50 carb is 13mm
did you take the jets out and clean them out and make sure the passage ways are not blocked
make sure the throttle cable is adjusted correctly or getting stuck open
not having an air filter will make the bike run a little different but should still run and not cut out
clean the spark plug it might be fouling!!
-
It does have fuel, not a whole lot but there is fuel in there, i cleaned the fuel line when i had it apart so i know thats not blocked and i checked to make the sure the fuel switch isnt blocked.
Yea i cleaned the jets and stuck some guitar string through to make sure it went though and was clear, the throttle cable it self works good i checked it when i and it retracts and extends like it should only thing is i need to take the handle apart since it sounds like it has sand or dirt stuck in there because it i turn it to full throttle it doesn't roll back to no throttle on its own i have to turn it back. as for the adjustment on it im not sure i assume its fine since he said it ran no problem but then he stopped using it and it just sat for about a year and now wont start.
The spark plug does look a little dirty so ill order a new one and clean that one for now and try it out to see if it works.
The only thing is when i had the carb apart i didn't see any kind of hole or port where the float valve is that would allow fuel to know down in there, when i put the carb back together i filled the bowl myself with fuel so maybe it ran off that and then ran out basically since its not getting any, because when i sprayed carb cleaner into the fuel inlet port it was going anywhere except coming back out at me, shouldn't it be coming out of where the float valve is?
-
Sounds to me you need to adjust your float height. When the is sitting dead (no throttle) the needle is closing the fuel. Try to adjust it and see If that helps
-
How would I adjust? Loosen the screw holding the float device down?
-
ok so i just took the carb apart again and cleaned it once more i also drained the tank of the old gas and cleaned it then filled it up with brand new gas, and i also cleaned the spark plug, i sprayed the the fuel inlet on the carb with cleaner to see if i could clean it out and then checked the float to make sure it was pulling the valve out. I put everything back together and filled the bowl of the carb with gas and it started first kick with choke on but it still turns off after about 10-15 sec, after it turned off i loosened the drain screw on the bowl and it was bone dry so gas is not getting past the fuel inlet and im having no luck clearing that path up so i might have to get a new carb
also i think the throttle cable might need adjustment as said above because when i would go to take the choke off it would rev higher the more i took off the choke, i could bassically rev the engine with choke switch.
So how would i go about adjusting the throttle cable?
also where can i pick up a 13mm carb for this thing online all i can find on ebay is 18mm,20mm and bigger
-
I have a stock carb if you need it. $40 shipped. Does not have the slide needle.
-
Where the needle that goes on the float (on the metal little bar) bend that a little bit to allow gas to go in
-
i might be wrong cos i havent had a stock carb apart in ages but i think the float is all plastic and that is including the tab you would bend on a larger carb
so i dont think you can adjust the float level, but i might be wrong!
the cable should have an adjuster at the throttle and on top on the carb cap

I also offerd the guy a new take off stock carburetor via a PM. He has lots of questions that needs to be answered. I hope it all works out well in the end. I just wanted to chime in, I too have a box full of take of parts...

Yea it's plastic so you can't bend it

Also TT I just sent you a pm
-
I will try to fix the guy up with a carb, intake and a cable. Thanks for the trust factor. I will not let anyone down..

When you get it. Hook it up and do not open and fill the floatbowl like you did before. Just turn on the petcock, choke it and kick it a few times. If you use this manifold make sure the head has a real good intake manifold gasket attatched or get a new one to seal up all the air leaks. Otherwise just take the manifold off. Take the cable out carefully by compressing the spring and re-install it all back correctly. You should have no problems. If you open the bottom of the carburetor you could damage the floatbowl and bend the float. Unscrew the carburetor cap on top. Compress the spring and do not let the needle fall out. Install your cable. Test the throttle a few times to make sure it returns correctly. Turn the fuel on and run the engine..

Ok will do. I'll let you guys know how it goes when I get the parts

Kingunis,
Your package was sent out today.. If you have questions please ask, were all here to help you to get your bike running correctly. You have all the information you need at your fingertips..
You may not to open the carburetor and just change out the throttle cable on the handlebar. This way you do not need to open the carburetor at all, just slide the lead ball into your twist throttle..??
Thnks.

Ok thank you. Yea I was just going to swap in the new carb and hook up lines and attach the cable it has on it to my twist throttle and then hopefully everything is working after that
-
Well I got the parts today and everything runs great. Thanks a lot for the help guys and thanks for the fast shipping TT
