70 drum to 50 wheel conversion? conversion

im curious as my current 50 setup still uses the stock front drum about upgrading the brakes. Heres my thoughts, taking an old black hub from the front of my 98 xr70 that is much bigger than the 50 hub, unlacing it, and using the stock spokes off the back wheel (12in) to lace it to a 12 in front rim for a 50, end result giving me a 12in front wheel with a huge increase in drum brake circumference over stock? has anyone done this..............

sounds like a lot of work to keep drum brakes...I would just buy a disk set-up for the front. You can buy them through companies like Sano I think, or Storm makes one.

Is a cable operated disc brake system much of an upgrade though?

Thats true, but you could always go with the Fast50's hydraulic brake set-up. They work for either stock forks or speed forks and they work great!

    Same number of spokes?

    Same diameter spoke mounting area?

Cut-off wheel and a metric thread die, and some time to spare?

Have you tryed a longer brake actuator arm on the 50 brakes, they work pretty well. Could maybe use both or as a plan B if the 70 swap over doesn't work out.

yeha i know i could get discs, personally i have never minded the drums. just look at a 70 hub compared to a 50 hub and the difference is huge! i think if it does have the same number of holes it would be a free big brake upgrade. why bolt on when you can make?

It's do-able... I think Kurlon and a couple of his buds were doing that on their motard bikes. Just gotta get a rim with the right spoke count. Buchanans will make spokes for you.
