I'm a newbie!! I quit riding full sized bikes about 10 years ago, and would like to get back into the sport in a cheaper (and less risky) way.
I'm considering building a bike. I'm partial to Hondas, so I'm looking at building a perimeter framed bike. However, I've also seen some pretty slick Honda-like builds without the perimeter frames. Id like to know if the benefit of the BBR perimeter frames are worth the cost. Here are a couple questions:
1) Is there any mechanical/ structural advantage one may gain from a perimeter frame?
2) Are there any alternative to the stubby side number plates? I think they look dumb.
3) Are there certain (and more favorable) motors you can put in a perimeter frame compared to the alternatives?
4) Any other limitations or advantages of the perimeter frame?
5) Any limitations or advantages to a standard/internal frame?

you could put in a 180cc engine in a perimeter frame if you really wanted, Some people say that they are amazing, and others say its a waste of time, if you have any buddies with the two types of frames, they would tell you and you could choose your preference by riding. Standard frames are usually cheaper than BBR perimeter frames, but you could easily find a perimeter frame for 150$ on ebay, that being a chinese heavy P.O.S. It all depends on you

Thanks for the response!! Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a perimeter frame bike.
Does anyone know if perimeter frames handle better, or if they have a more optimal rake angle (for handling/cornering)? I really wonder what prompted BBR to make those frames. Surely there is a better reason than for looks.
Anyone have any thoughts in the above questions?

I've never ridden a perimeter bike but I think they look dumb on mini bikes. IMO the best looking (and from what I hear, riding) bike out there right now are the SSR CRF70 frames. I figure its got to be good, the Red Baron factory bikes are running the SSR frame. For an idea of what that looks like when fully built, check out the SSR 160R You could build one, which can be fun but if I had the money I would just the buy the SSR and run that.
Thats my 2 cents.

If you want to know more first hand info about the BBR prim frames give Duane Brown a call @ BBR he will be more than happy to answer most all of your questions with regards to BBRs quality products.

IMO without a doubt BBR perimeter frame is the strongest, most comfortable (when set up the way it should be) best built frame out there. I have built and rode pretty much every type of bike excluding some of the china bikes. you can find great deals on them used. you can use a honda or klx based motor depending on what frame you buy. ( the new one uses either or)
2) Are there any alternative to the stubby side number plates? I think they look dumb.
they have a new style side number plate with a vent in it that looks a lot better.
3) Are there certain (and more favorable) motors you can put in a perimeter frame compared to the alternatives?
depends which BBR frame you buy. v3 frame takes either motor
4) Any other limitations or advantages of the perimeter frame?
you must use a marzocchi front end with the correct length forks for it to be set up right ( can not use the early short forks or bike will sit stink bugged) . there are many differnt shock angles that change ride height, stiffen or soften the rear end for your liking. it is very adjustable, most people don't know this, or how to do it correctly. once set up correct it is almost like riding a big bike. very stable.
5) Any limitations or advantages to a standard/internal frame?
stock klx frames are great as well as the new ssr70 frames.. throw a BBR swingarm on one of them with an elka and they work just fine.. I would build what ever you can find the best deal on cause it is not gonna be cheap to start from scratch and build one of these bikes. maybe even buy a bike used all ready done... ssr70 frame takes crf70 tank, seat and plastic in case you didnt know.

Well, it also depends. this is taged in the crf70 forum. BBR does not make perimeter frames for crf70s anymore (i think they only produced like 4 or 5).
so are you looking to build a crf50 or klx110?
i know someone that raced the BBR perimeter frame for his 50, and he said he hated it. all the holes ovaled out, and the handleing was bad.
that was his opinion, my friend who rode that same bike said it was amazing
its all preference

Thanks for your responses. I'm not so concerned that the motor or frame is from a CRF70. Actually, I'm not really sure how "Honda" the bike would be after completion!! Lol! I'm just going for the aluminum frame look with Red plastics. My preference for Honda prevents me from looking into a DRZ/Klx set up, so I felt the only appropriate place to post was this sub-forum.
I'm more concerned for aluminum framed Honda look with a 124-160 engine. I'm considering a 160 Daytona. I've got some more research to do in that area, though. Will a Daytona 160 motor fit a BBR v3 frame?
Thanks for all your responses and 2cents worth. I'll keep pondering, deliberating, and well SAVING!!
Keep the opinion and suggestions coming. I'll consider your input.

I just built klx based bbt perimeter bike and ive had or ridden almost all the set ups you can run with stock frame and it puts them to shame the bbt feels like a big bike corners amazing feels comfortable and reall stable as apose to a stock frame they feel squarely to me. And as for choosing a 50 based or klx based depends on the size you want the 110 based is a lot bigger then the crf50 based frame. But if you want a 50 based motor in the klx size frame you can het the mid size pro or the new v3. But then again it's all personal preference you might like it you might hate it.

a bbr v3 frame is klx/drz 110 aftermarket frame, and is the only perimeter frame that is not a chinese peice of crap. and yes you can put a yx160 motor in it. it has two optional motor mount set ups one being honda fifty mounts one being klx/drz110 mounts. you could put red plastic on it wich is klx110 copy wich is kx65 copy.

hope you have deep pockets. Check out the BBR MM12P. Looks like what your looking for. You can even get it in red and would save thousands over building one from scratch and or buying someones elses used stuff. Plus you'd be riding instead of wrenching

I am the one that took crf50 BBR frames and made them into 70s not BBR. Derek Costella rode one. I had custom subframes and tank mounts made. they ran a longer swingarm then normal and all crf70 plastic... they were a good bike but seat height to pegs was cramped. there were 4 built, one was stolen there is still 3 of them around as far as I know. 2 in vegas and username on here has one. there are much better setups out there now, those are a thing of the past. also not 1 of those bikes ever had and cracking or holes ovaled out. one was ridden weekly on dirt jumps and on a backyard track the other 3 were raced continually. you can not beat BBR quality period.

Yeah, I looked on BBR's website to see if they sold their own bikes, but after your post, I went back and sniffed a little harder. You're definitely right!! This mm12p is exactly what I'm looking for--minus that stubby number plate. Thanks for your post!

So what's with ovaled holes? Can you be more specific?

he said all the holes were ovaled. The only one that i saw was the swingarm axle hole, not bad but it was there. I have yet to see a frame not oval at the swingarm axle holes....

dont get me wrong I am not saying it is not a good setup by any means. you got a great deal on it as far as I know and you will probably like it alot. Dohc daytona motor in that thing would be so nice.
