    Shift Lever hitting Engine cover

Need some help from you CT70 owners.

When I picked up this bike the shift lever was mounted only half way on the spline and angled down further then I would normally position it.

I now realize that was done purposefully. When you mount the lever properly, you can shift the lever downward but if you try to shift it upwards, it hits the engine cover. This is a 3 down transmission. I don't like the lever mounted 1/2 way on the spline as it is starting the damage the grooves.

I am thinking that the shape and depth of the more modern CRF50/70 engine covers may be the issue.

Tried two different engine covers and 3 different shift levers and still have the problem.

Anyone else ever encounter this? If so, how did you solve the issue?

I am assuming the answer will be get a CT style cover, which leads to my next question. Are there any budget CT aftermarket engine cover?

Or perhaps I should try a lever like one of these:

Because the newer 12V CDI engines have a crank end that is 3/8" wider than the early 6V points-type engines, the engine covers are also wider. As you said above, you will need either a CT70 or a '68-'87 Z50 ignition cover in order for the shift lever to clear.

The crf/xr 12 volt motors use a shift shaft that is about 1/2" longer. So you can also swap in a new shift shaft for some clearance on the 12 volt type covers.

Would that involve splitting the case?

No, but you'd need to pull the clutch and primary gear. It installs from the right side of the engine.

Just found a post on how to replace it. Looks like I either spend $50 to 60 for a new cover or $40 plus seal and gasket and have to pull the motor apart. If this was on the motor I already have partially disassembled I might go with a new shaft.

I do like the idea thou kirrbby. Especially since I have some minor spindle damage. I will have to remember that for down the road.

Thanks! I thought the part was discontinued and eBay was my only option.

Nice! Would you mind posting a picture of it on the motor?
