What could cause this? You can feel it kinda slipping, and about every third kick it will catch and maybe start, I drained the oil and took the cover off and looked at it but couldn't see much. Is this a motor tear down to fix?

See if this helps you out.

Try adjusting the clutch first. Loosen the nut on the side of the clutch cover, turn the screw counter clockwise until it gets hard, then back up 1/4-1/2 a turn. Then if its still slips, then you need a new clutch. New plates are needed, and i would reccommend getting 6 hd springs. I just did this to my bike, i couldn't believe the difference.
i bet your clutch springs are just worn out and need to be replaced, mine also does the same thing, its a pain!
I had the same problem. I put new HD springs in it the other night although the old ones didn't seem that bad. Old ones were Two Bros and so were new ones.
Any advice on how to check out the plates before i put it back together? Just doesn't seem that the springs were the problem but after researching, seemed like it was a good starting point.
Also, what do I need to make sure is going on inside the engine before I put the cover back on? First time I've ever been in there. BTW, the engine's sitting on a bench not on bike.
So worn out clutch springs will make the kick starter slip? I did not know that.
That's what I've heard.
Mainly the clutch plates wear out and the stock springs need upgraded to the hd springs..depending on how much compression ur bike has may be to much for stock clutch and springs to kick over without slipping sometimes.. When u check out the plates just see if theres alot of wear on the surface of them u should be able to tell pretty easily.. as far as puttin it back together ya need the little arm that the triangle piece with the 3 bearings sits on then ya line up the V's on them so it fits perfect and the bikes gotta be on its side bc if that moves at all its gonna mess everything up.. then ya put the cover on and adjust ur clutch and premo!
i should be able to shift it in and out of gear with the case off right? the shifter just doesnt feel like it should to just put it all back together.
sorry for hijacking your thread Grassman.
no i believe ya have to put the cover on so it holds it all together tight otherwise that triangle with the bearings will slip off of where its suppose to be put it on leave the oil cap off and shine a light in and make sure everything is still straight and good inside
Yep that clutch is indeed is the problem, was able to adjust enough to start it good, but there was more power in that motor that I was unable to get to.
This is what you need brotha
