    Valve Adjustment:KLX110

    Bike used KLX 110

    Tools needed:

    8mm socket with extension

    16mm open end wrench

    9mm open end wrench

    8mm open end wrench

    Feeler gauge

Flat head screw driver (Aftermarket style head)

Needle nose pliers (Stock style head)

    Step 1

Remove the four 8mm cam cover bolts using the 8mm socket with extension. Inspect the O-ring for damage, replace if necessary.

    Step 2

Use an 8mm open end wrench to remove the left bolt from the upper tappet cover. Use the 8mm socket to remove the right side bolt. Inspect the O-ring for damage, replace if necessary

    Step 3

Use your 8mm socket with extension to remove the two bolts from the lower tappet cover. Inspect the O-ring for damage, replace if necessary

    Step 4

Set the motor at top dead center by using a 16mm open end wrench. Turn the sprocket counterclockwise until the T marked on the cam sprocket lines up with the bolt hole and casting projection mark inside the head.

    Step 5

To adjust the valve clearances, loosen the adjusting screw locknut with a 9 mm open end wrench.

    Step 6

Insert the feeler gauge between the adjusting screw and the valve stem. If the clearance is too loose/tight turn the adjusting screw until there is a light drag on the feeler gauge.

    Intake/Exhaust valve specification: .002 – .005

    Step 7 (Stock style head)

Hold the adjusting screw with the pair of needle nose pliers. Tighten the locknut with a 9 mm wrench. Make sure it doesn't interfere with the adjustment. Be careful when tightening the locknut making sure not to turn the adjuster screw. Always recheck the clearance after tightening the locknut.

    Step 7A (Aftermarket style head)

Hold the adjusting screw with a flat head screwdriver. Tighten the locknut with a 9 mm wrench. Make sure it doesn't interfere with the adjustment. Be careful when tightening the locknut making sure not to turn the adjuster screw. Always recheck the clearance after tightening the locknut.

Specification for adjusting screw locknut torque is 6.5 ft-lb

Repeat steps 1-3 in reverse order to reinstall the cam cover and tappet covers.

Check your down-tube for a specs sticker

Great write-up and a big help! I'm not especially mechanical (though not incapable either), and this walk-through was an excellent procedural guide.

The only thing I'd like to add, though, is that my daughter's KLX 110 is a 2003 and it's possible (?) that there's differences from year-to-year? There's a sticker on the down-tube that specifically indicates .0016 - .0031 for both upper and lower on our bike. I initially followed the .002 - .005 reflected in the thread and set both to .004. It resulted in a lot of valve-ticking. After having found that sticker based on another post, I re-adjusted both intake and exhaust to .002, and now it's purring nicely.
