Need advice for total Motard Newb

Well I decided I am going to try this motarding thing. There is a race comming up at the F1 cart track that I am going to hit.

Right now my bike is full MX mode and I have no clue how to set the bike up other than street tires. What should I do with suspension, etc? What are some decent tires that are pretty cheap? Also should I keep the 12inch front on it or should I swap out for a 10in(I should have access to one)

This is my bike set up as of now:

    Chassis/suspensionC +1frame,Five-o +2 swinger,BBR sp5 forks,Fox air shock,tall seat,12/10 cyclone rims,storm front disk,stock rear drum

    Motor:TB117, Kitaco Inner rotor ignition,TB manual clutch,Fast50s 1' pipe,Kitaco Super Coil, 16/37 gearing

Like I said before any help is welcome. Also I did a search and have a few ideas on where to start so please dont say do a search.

Sounds like you're set up nicely!! The only thing I might suggest is going to a 10" front. And of course some nice sticky Dunlops... Not the cheapest, but well worth the investment!! Here's my little indoor bike...

The track I run is really tight. So a good upgrade for me will be a front disc. My motor is a basic 88 built for torque. Stock head, cam and a re-jetted stock carb. 30w oil in the forks. Risse air shock with a plus 2" DC swinger.

I ride more roadrace style and can drag a knee at will with this set up. I may not have the top end as some of the other bikes, but I can gett'um in the corners.

I wish I could give you more info, but I'm quite the 'tard rookie myself.

I would say go to a 10" front, Dunlop TT91s or Pirelli SL26s (good and cheaper), and a 34T on the rear.

You will fry the pads in the Storm disc, we had one and my 8 yr old can overwork that disc on the street. We like the stock drums better and they will be fine on the street.

That should be all you need.

    Moose ,

    - I see you moved the forks up , what 2 inches ?? Does the wipers on the forks hit the lower triple ?

    - Also did you add any more shims for preload to the springs ?
    Just say'n ....

Yep!! You were right. The cam, and a re-jetted carb turned my lil' 88 into a nice torque monster. A bit limited on top end, but good scoot out of the corners! I sat out a week due to a shoulder injury, but the next track session was a night and day difference.

    Thanks again!!

I did move my forks up, but I don't think it was two full inches. I moved them up so that the wipers, at full compression, were just a hair under the triple. If you need an exact measurement, PM me and I'll get that for ya. No contact at all with the lower triple. Even stuffin' her hard into corners. No extra shims either. Just the heavier 30w oil at the recommended max. 4oz per leg, I think it was...

They don't dive too quickly initally when you get on the binders ? Or I guess the 30w oil took care of that problem ?

I was figure'n that I'd have ta shim it up alittle to make it alittle less mushy ?

I don't really notice a dive at all. I sit very "neutral" on the bike and I'm hanging off most of the time since there really isn't any long straights on the track I ride at. I think my knees end up scrubbing off more speed than my brakes. LOL!! It must be the 30w that slows down any dive. I may try shimming the front a bit when I get my shock recharged. But right now it seems to work fairly well...

This shot was taken with a stock rear shock with an HD spring, before I added the Risse air shock. With the new shock, I have just a touch more rake. I'd estimate around 1/2"... The shock is the same length as a stocker, but heavier on the preload so less sag. Oh yeah... The pipe is loaded with the BBR "quiet core" insert (basically a restrictor cone) to add a bit of that needed back pressure..

THANKS!! However I can't take all the credit. If it was not for folks like yourself, willing to lend their knowledge, and a site like Planet Minis, what you see would never have been possible. Besides.... Now I have someone who I can blame for my new addiction...

Balance the chassis, quicken up the steering.

First I heard of a SL26 not taking a bead.

If you run Chinese rims the TT91s, BT601s and other hi-po rubbers will not bead at all 90% of the time, my experience anyway. I'd run a big tube to help them seat (3.50), if you wanna try this route.

I've never had a stock 50 rim not bead up on any tire.

Thanks alot guys.I guess I will go with the Sl26's.Also I have Cyclone rims not china junk. How much of a disadvantage is the 12inch front?I could possibly build one since I have all the parts, but its just a PITA to build them in my opinion.
