Re: Z50 of the month for November/December 2010

    Guys,

Alright, I finally got my shocks so you can throw me in the mix for this month.

    Here is the details:

This all started with my 80 Z50 that I had bought as a basket case many years back. I fixed it up got it running and it sat in my shed forever so I sold it and a couple others years later to a buddy. It came up for sale again a couple of years ago and it had a Candy Red custom painted tank and frame. It was nothing special just a clean little bike with a CR50 engine that I would ride around in the pits at the car races. I noticed while cleaning it one day that the swingarm had some play where the bolt went through the frame. I started a search for a frame and finally found a very cherry 1980 Z50 frame at Kajun Mini Trails a local bike shop that specializes in Honda Minis. Well when I took the bike apart to change frames I think I lost my mind. I decided to build the little bike that I always wanted.

I had a vision of what I wanted this bike to look like and it took a lot of searching for the parts that I wanted to complete the bike. I made several visits to Kajun Minis searching for used parts and hard to find trinkets. I think it took about five different junk bikes to build this one. From Kajun Mini, Ebay, Planet Minis to the local Honda shop it took me more time to find parts that were in great shape then it did to build the bike. I cut the side cover brackets off of a junk donor 1976 Mini Trail and welded them on my frame so I could use the side cover on my 1980. All of the parts for the bike have been stripped to the bare metal and powdercoated black. The tank and side cover have been painted by Jeff from Little Farms collision with automotive paint that matched my race car. I was very lucky as the factory tank and seat from my original 1980 Z50 bike were in perfect condition. I also used the chrome front fender of off the 1976 model bike as it was like new. I bought a new KDF rear fender as I liked the shape better then the original Honda. I knew I would be installing a new Piranha 140cc engine with ported head and TB Cam so I decided that a Front Disc Brake kit from CHP would be something that would be a necessary requirement. I also thought that an aluminum Extended Swingarm would help it ride better and help keep the front wheel on the ground when I decided twist the throttle real hard. I got a great deal on a set of aluminum wheels and street tires from a member here on Planet Minis. I used a hard to find 1972 H model Honda 4 speed speedometer and headlight off of a CT70H then converted everything to 12 volts. I found the taillight bracket and the backing plate at Kajun Mini trails and ordered a new lens, gasket and bolts from CHP. When reassembling I changed every nut and bolt on the entire bike to Metric Stainless Steel. I basically made the bike that Honda never did, the fat tank, wide seat and handle bars from the 79 to 87 models and side cover, chrome fenders, lights and speedometer from the early model Mini Trails. I keep telling everyone that it is a rare 78-1/2. I tried to use as many Honda parts as I could on this project. This is the bike I always wanted, I hope you guys like it.

I'll put my '85 in again as I've made quite a few changes since the 1st time I entered it and plus it's half way through the month and I want the voting to start!
