    Broken header

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I raced today and on my last moto i got no more then 15 feet off of the gate and the weld just randomly snapped and the two pieces blew apart. And it's a FMF megabomb header from an '06 CRF 250R that hasn't been used over 15-20 hours or so.

Is it the ti? If it is, that weld was not created in the proper conditions!

Yup the whole system from the muffler to the header is all ti. It just doesn't make sense to me why it would just break like that.. what do you mean right conditions like temp or maybe it was welded while it was contaminated with oils or dirt or something?

    Re: Broken header

Ti has to be welded in pure argon gas or the weld will become brittle and will sheer off just like what u have there!

    Re: Broken header

Oh yeah i was reading about that online, but i would think a comoany as huge as FMF would know what they're doin.. but maybe it was just a defective part or something. I have a friend who lives down the street from me thats a pretty experienced welder. You think theres any chance that this could be tig welded back together under the right conditions?

Yeah i sent my head to faction mx to have new exhaust valves installed and the seats cut in my '06 CRF 250r. After they got it back to me 2 weeks later than they told me they would, they forgot to send half the parts with it. So they sent me those, and needless to say, I put 5 hours on the motor (just casual riding, no racing), and the exhaust valve snapped right at the head and ruined everything in my top end but the cam and guides.

No not yet, but i doubt they would do anything about it. I don't have receipts or anything either because the exhaust was already on the bike when I bought it.

Ti is pretty and way cool, but not a very good MX pipe material.

    Re: Broken header

Well I talked to a welder today, and he said because the pipe is ti and the metal is so thin at that point he is afraid that it might melt the metal too much and possibly damage it further. Any second opinions to this? I really dont wanna buy a new header..

I called them and they said they needed a receipt in order to be able to do anything with it, and I dont have one. So i found one on ebay that was almost brand new and bought it for $150
