    Crash protection

I crashed pretty good today. Mangled my foot, messed up my new tb 1/4 throttle, and brake lever on my crf50. I know that won't be the last time I eat it, so I was wondering what you guys are doing for crash protection for your bike? Handguards? Bar ends? Peg sliders? What's worked for you guys?

Not really too much you can do for bike protection. Just dont crash lol. All I wear is a helmet, leatt, gloves, googles, good knee pads, and a freash pair of DC's. Crashing is just part of it, just try and crash less

I might try to make some axle sliders and see if i can pick up some handguards or something. I can't believe that no one runs them though...

I'll have to get something better for my ankles than DC's. Knee pads would be nice.

    Re: Crash protection

Oh i forgot, I also wear those little ankle braces from walmart or what ever. They velcro on and have a little metal plate in them. I find I bang my ankles up pretty good every time I ride so that helps. It didnt even occur to me that you ride on the street. I think they make sliders and such for 50's. Id search stunt 50's or something like that. Ive seen pegs and stuff.

    Re: Crash protection

Those ankle braces sound interesting. Maybe they can help me get back on sooner. Going for xrays here today sometime. I've crashed on my gsxr twice and been fine, while this little 50 has me going to the hospital!

I'll check out 50stunt. I think I might have ruined my throttle on the pavement yesterday, so I'd like to find something for the bars.

    Thanks for the response!

    Re: Crash protection

there are companies out there that make bar sliders and axle sliders. might even be on 50stunt, but i cant remember where i saw them.get a good folding shifter too. plastic hand guards wont help protect levers and such too much. only true protection for that is something similar to bark busters, but IDK if the would fit, or even if that would be a good idea for stunting (seen them drag people when the try to bail, cant get thier hands out of them)

    Re: Crash protection

I was looking at the billet ones 50stunt has, but I'd rather find some delrin/nylon bar ends. I may even try a set of cycra pro bends that I have in the garage without shields. Not sure if they're for 7/8'' bars though. I'll look into a folding shifter. Thanks.

    Re: Crash protection

best thing to do for your levers is to always keep your perch's slightly loose

I dont mean so you can take your pinky finger and move your levers around, but loose enough that if you bail they slide on the bars up or down....I havent broken or bent levers in years since doing this

As far as your throttle, best bet is to buy an aluminum throttle tube, the plastics ones as soon as you crash pretty much crack as well

Keep those perches fairly loose and you will save yourself many levers.

50 stunt bars and bar ends, xr100 or bbr throttle flipped upside down so it can't break. Run the throttle cable under the brake lever. Try asv levers if you are still braking levers. I never broke anything besides a throttle before I flipped it. I chuck my bike and let it crash.

    Re: Crash protection

Knock on wood the only thing I've ever actually broke is a rear hand brake lever. But I did bend a foot peg mount, flipped back in 3rd close to being pinned. The only advice I have is ride it, when it breaks buy stronger parts.

    Re: Crash protection

Now that I've had time to hobble out to check out the bike, I guess I rashed the swingarm a little as well.. I don't think the 50stunt pegs will work on my lahayes swingarm. It has a big bike style chain adjuster. I've seen some axle sliders, but nothing that I could use for my application

    I guess I'll keep searching...

    Re: Crash protection

add BMX pegs then if you cant add the 50stunt rear pegs. Also 50stunt front pegs and buy the delrin peg sliders. ASV levers, Billet throttle, aluminum bar end sliders from moose or 50stunt makes delrin for bars now. you could also try SME or whatever that motard company is and they make delrin axel sliders. If on a budget make your own. 2 skateboard wheels and a bolt to the swinger(would have to drill a small hole).

If i'm about to wreck, I like to try to position my head to take the brunt of the impact in order to save my bike as much as possible.

    Re: Crash protection

You said you have the big bike style axle adjusters so I would try to do something like what SME sells with machining a new adjuster block that has provisions for a bolt on slider. Shouldnt cost hardly anything at all, I mean a high school shop class could program and mill these things out. They're very basic. Its a shame that the axles arent hollow so that we could just run the bolt through type like i have on my supermoto... Ape 550

    Re: Crash protection

Nice bike. I have a ktm smr that has the axle sliders through the axle. I was thinking about having the machinest up the street work something out, but I think it may cost me... I wish my axle was large enough to just tap some threads into it. And then there's the front to still think about..

Me too, the worse thing I've had happen was a bent peg mount. Cheap fix, but I went with a bbr h/d mount, lost my kickstand and added some weight, but It's not gonna bend again.

I was around the top of 3rd when I looped out and did that...the bike slid on it's side for probably 30ft before stopping haha. I figured it was destroyed.
