    2015 TTR 50 Wont Start

I bought a 2015 TTR 50 off craigslist knowing that it will not start with the electric start. The bike will bump start just fine. The first thing I did was charge the battery. Next, I heard a clicking sound coming from the starter relay so I purchased a new starter relay. The bike still wont start with the new starter relay or the charged battery. Then I realized that I charged the 2 amp battery with a 6 amp charger so I purchased a brand new battery thinking that I fried the battery. The bike still wont start with the new battery, all it does is make a clicking sound coming from the starter relay when I try to start it. What now?

Is your starter grounded. Is power going to the starter. A multimeter would be helpful

Bypass the starter relay and see if the starter motor turns over.

How do you bypass this type of relay? I know on most relays you just cross the two terminals

Access the power wire going to the starter motor, use a jumper wire from the positive side of the battery and touch it to where the power wire is bolted. You might have to turn the key to the ON position to use the negative ground to complete the circuit, and get the starter motor to turn over.

I tried to bypass the the starter relay but still didnt get anything. I went out and bought a multimeter and I tested the the wire that connects to the starter wire and got a good reading. So does that mean the starter is bad? How do I test the starter it self?

Unbolt it from the engine and use a jumper wire from a battery to the positive post and ground the negative wire to the body of the starter on the workbench.

Ok I just tried that and it doesnt do anything. How could a starter go bad on a 2015? Also would a 2012 starter work?

According to the Yamaha parts fiches here and here, the starter motors are not the same, for whatever reason.

Wow thats an expensive starter. Does it matter that the voltage is 12.7 at the battery but 12.5 at the starter? Is there anything else I should check before buying a starter motor?

So you're saying that after putting 12V to the starter motor, it doesn't do anything?? Doesn't want to jump out of your hand when you touch the positive wire to it?

    Update
I ended up taking a huge risk and ordered a used 2012 starter motor off ebay because it looks identical to the 2015 one. It works and fits perfectly! When I received the bike the pilot jet was clogged so the previous owner must have broke the starter by trying to crank it for a long period of time because the bike wouldn't stay running. Anyways thanks for helping me identify the problem.

Good, glad to hear you were able to sort it out. As I had said above, the starter motor part numbers are different, for whatever reason. It could just be a matter of one having a black outer case, and one having a silver outer case, and the different colors get different part numbers.
