Need advice on replacing (Synapse) fork seals

I have a CT70 with a set of 30mm Synapse fork legs. (These are copies of the Honda NSR50 fork legs.) There is some cracking going on in the seals, so I want to change them out.

First I need to know if OEM Honda NSR50 seals are a direct replacement. I have no reason to believe otherwise, but just wanted to check and see if anyone could confirm this.

Second, I am hoping to get some advice with changing the seals on NSR fork legs. It looks like the insides will just slide out with the removal of the bottom 8mm bolt. Could it be that easy?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Yup. When I had my Synapse forks plated I replaced the seals with OEM Honda seals. They do come apart with just the removal of the damping rod bolt at the bottom also.

Thank you very much sir. That's all I needed to know. Looks like I got myself a little winter project ahead of me. Damn, I hate taking forks off...

Holy hell! Changing fork seals is an SOB! Getting the old seals out entailed much cussing. Getting the new ones in isn't much better. Of course I damaged one of the seals in the process and have to order another one. Never want to do this job again!

Ummmm. Changing fork seals on a Gold Wing is an SOB...Changing fork seals on a minibike is a POC. ...I should have mentioned a little heat works wonders for this job.

This might be a stupid question, but how do I apply heat without messing up the paint finish? Do you use a torch or stick 'em in the oven?

Torch, just don't stay in one spot. You know the dust seals are easily replaced without changing the fork seals right?

A heat gun works good too.

When I bought new seals, they came as a set, with a dust seal and inner seal. So I figured while I had the forks apart, might as well change both. But I didn't realize what a pain it was gonna be until it was a little too late. When it comes time to do the seals on my NSR, I will more than likely follow your advice and just replace the dust seals. Those pop right out.
