Hello,
I am going to add turn signals and rear brake to my 1970 z50 k2. Has anyone done this? I have the rear brake pedal, and I want to see how the switch is mounted to the bike. I have seen the brackets on ebay and other sites but I have no idea how to hook it up. If anyone can post pics of your set up I would really apreciate it.
Thanks
Rick

Wish I had a picture for you right now but, it shares the muffler bolt. You'll get it.
Turn signals? Are you sure about that. Pre '74 laws - don't need 'em.

Rick,
Adding turn signals will be a tough job if you want to do it correctly. The K2 bikes that came here to the states were never equipped with them so you will be stuck trying to find the correct parts from Australia and Japan. The General export bikes I think they were called had blinkers and a horn. The front forks had little standoffs welded to them that held the blinkers and the rear taillight assembly also had mounts for the blinkers. These parts are really hard to find, but not impossible if this is what you really want to do. You will need the correct wiring harness, Blinkers, forks, Taillight assembly and handle bar controls to do the job correctly. I think TB Parts has some of the general export blinkers and maybe a wiring harness, but the rest of the stuff you will need to source by looking on ebay Australia, Monkey Bike UK and Monkey Bike Garage all Australian sites. There is no guarantee you will find them all, but that is my best advice to you if that is the route you wish to take.
The brake switch mounts to the bracket that you have seen for sale. That bracket mounts to the frame and there are two springs that go to your brake pedal one is just a return spring for the pedal and the other little spring activates the switch.
Here are a couple pictures to help you see how they go:

On the K2 models there is the switch that mounts to the frame for the brake pedal which I have shown you the pictures and there is also a switch inline on the rear brake cable that activates when the rear brake handle is squeezed. The factory wire harness for the K2 is setup to utilize this setup.
Here is a picture of the switch inline on the cable:

Hope this all helped.

Hey Rick, just did this on a K2 for the second time. Important considerations: if you are running the stock 6volt stator, you will probably be disappointed with the blinking ability at idle. There is not much juice at idle with these old systems. The first K2 I did this on works OK at idle, but not as good as I would like ( Yellow and black bike-just entered this one in classic Z50 of the month.) The second time, what I did was use a K1 wire harness and keyswitch, added a rectifier, and used a sealed battery. Bingo for better blinking, horn, and lights in general, with this set-up. The problem is finding a place for the battery. Since I used a sealed battery, you can place it in any position, so I hid mine under the seat. (Black and red bike.) The other thing you will need to do is add the extra wiring to the harness. This is really not that hard. What you need are two wires that run to the rear blinkers (it is a good idea to bring a ground wire to the blinkers as well, but not absolutely necessary.) The same wires that run to the back lights end up in your headlight bucket, where they split into two female ends: one for the blinker, and one for the handlebar controller. The handlebar control I used is one for a ct70 K3, available at dratv.com for $14 for a repop, or $33 for the real Honda one. You can drill a hole on the right handlebar (look at yellow bike,) and you have a horn button or even a kill switch you can use as well. The other thing you need is the blinker relay, also at dratv for $7. You will need some crimp-on connectors (about 10 female bullet type, two will need to be the double type, a couple male bullets, and a couple of female spade connectors to go to the blinker relay.) good luck, let me know if you need some help.
