Every bike gets a name some way or another around here...This is the eighteen dollar bike. Found this on ebay with a local pick-up only, out near McKinney, Tx. The listing made it sound like it was going to be a hassle to pick up, and no one else bid on it. Well sometimes FREE is not cheap enough. Anyway, it was missing engine, front wheel, and fork tubes, and had a seat from some XR or XL on it. I was in the process of painting the '69 Z50/SL70 chopper at the time (2007,) and had spare paint, so this one got done in the same colors. I thought since this was not an original color, I was going to do the sail on the tank in the base coat silver, instead of white. Honda used this color on some of the bigger SL's, but I think it looks sweet on these models too. 88cc piston, shark cam, the usual oil pump, clutch and internal upgrades, replacements, and spit polish. I ride this one a good bit out in the yard and neighborhood. It is a gentle ride, with a little more power than stock. I have a taillight bracket, but don't have it on in these pics.
Thanks, man. I voted for your sweet Classic CT70 in the midsize category a couple of times. That black is beautiful on a CT, makes me want to do one that color.
kinda want to restore and mod it to be like a supermotard 12in wheels and full disk breaks new handle bars forks rear shocks and build the motor new exhaust . lots of ideas
Just had another question regarding the SL70 wheels and front end parts. The front end is uses stock fork sliders and lowers. The tripletree bottom and top clamp were widened 6mm by cutting it and rewelding them. The wheels, brakes, calipers, spacers and controls are all from a 2001 Honda CR80.The rear swingarm is the right width, and doesn't have to be widened. The rear wheel uses the original CR80 mount for the caliper, with some of the useless part cut off. An aluminum plate was made that is keyed to the square portion of the caliper bracket (this is actually the rear spacer on the right side in the stock set-up.) The other part of the aluminum plate has a lip that hangs over the bottom edge of the swingarm bracket. You can see two socket head screws sticking out of it in the picture of the rear end. That keeps the caliper from spinning. The front bracket was made of steel, and uses the screw mounts for the fork brace. Would anyone be interested in a retrospective build thread on this bike? Pics below of stock versus modded parts.
What ever happened to the detailed retrospective build thread?
I didnt know you could weld cast iron. The tripple clamps are cast, right?

I think you found the midlothian racer thread. The clamps are forged steel. You can weld cast iron, but it wants to crack. It would be too brittle for this application though.
Thanks for pointing me to this thread davmo! Once again I am completely blown away with your talents! This is one of the "old mini bikes" that my lil boy, Bryce, found in his Great Grandpa's barn. And after seeing several of the bikes on this thread alone, I really see why he would want to "fix it up".

Thanks, man. The SL70 was one I warmed up slowly to. One of the very first restorations ( if you can call it that,) was for a friend of a 1971 SL70. I rode it around the backyard, and was impressed with the amount of pep it had compared to the ct70. It feels more like a big bike than the Z's. Maybe you bring the SL down when you come to get the other bikes, and we can do a quick fix-up, or maybe even...
