That's a great idea. I was thinking of doing a really tall one a few years back, but never did it. A long cafe racer tank would be cool. Thanks for the good idea and kind words.

That would be great. There is room for a big tank like the Ape. Some pics of a Z50 tank, anXR75 tank, and a too-big-to-fit tank off a Triumph.
    Thanks,Chris.
Chris - if you can get your 80's tank to me before Sunday AM, I'll drop it by Dave's on Sunday PM after the Rocky Ridge Ranch trip. You can also pick up your 50cc rebuild kit while you're at it...

You guys have a blast Sunday! Wish I was going. Dang work. If it wasn't for needing to buy more mini parts, I would quit in a heartbeat. Speaking of work, I am on call now, and as such this build will only get sporadic attention. Probably Tuesday before any real action, unless I get lucky.

Hey davmo, how about building a coffin style tank found on 70's motocrossers. Maybe even all aluminum?

Hey BB, aluminum would be great, as this thing could use any weight reduction I can get. My TIG experience is pretty limited with thin aluminum, however. I love those tanks on a chopper. Nothing says 70's quite like it. Tanks are always kind of fun for me, because it is the one part of the bike that can be picked for appearance. I mean as long as it doesn't get in your way and holds gas, you can go so many ways. Thanks for the idea. BTW, I am supposed to be getting some of the HondaTB trees for KLX forks like you have tomorrow. I am going to try to make that adapter plate for the front brake panel I told you about a while back. I will let you know how it goes. Been working at the real job today, or I might have something more to post on this build. Maybe tonight.

Very cool. Like someone pointEd out to me when I got my triples, the Allen bolts are all about 1/4" too short for their own good. O purchased longer ones as someone nearly stripped theirs while snigging them down. I have had no problems with mine (with the longer hardware). Keep up the good work.

So what is the final plan for the front end Davmo? KLX or ZB50. Cannot wait to see this in mock up form. Looks like you are getting close.

Have located a set of ZB forks, Thanks to Geezer. So ZB forks, Motard tires & wheels, Either low bars or clip-ons, probably rearsets, thinking about front and back disk brake, rear seat fairing, low pipe,.. and gonna try for STREET LEGAL. Part of me wants to do the tracker look, or the Cafe, or somewhere in-between. Will try to post some more progress pics later tonight.

Sounds good Davmo. Rearsets might be an idea. I was thinking about it for my build and still might but they look bloody hard to mount on a hardtail. My fab skills are no where near at yours... yet. The disk on my rear brake seems to have a spot where it is slightly thicker. that is Chinese stuff though I guess. Can't wait to see the pics.

I like how you said "yet". There was a time when I was the newbie at all this. People were always so willing to help, and share their knowledge. You will get there. The way I am trying to mount rearsets is with these aluminum side panels. I am still on the fence, but my idea is a panel that the pegs, brake arm, master cylinder and caliper could mount on. The panels would also function as the foot shields you need with rearsets, and as chain guard on the other side. There would also be a cross-bracing quality. The panels are 6061 aluminum. They will get drilled and otherwise lightened up (plenty of speed holes.)
Pictures of the panels getting cut on the bandsaw, the flanges that will be welded to the frame to hold the panels, and the panels sitting in place. It is getting a little late to weld them in tonight, perhaps tomorrow.

Youre going to like the ZB forks. I think the KLX are too long for what youre doing. The flattrack Z also has ZB forks

Dude! Is that your F5 next to the bike? (sorry to comment on the axe before the bike) Big Gibson lover myself, but guitars instead of mandos. Your bike has some attitude. Those bars are crazy. Can you post a picture of the handlebars from the front? Thanks for the positive comments.

More build pics. The SL70 head tube I was thinking about using, before and after. The side panels were drilled and put on with socket head screws.
FINALLY ON THE GROUND!!!!! I couldn't wait to just see how it looks with wheels on. Yeah, the front forks are from a CT70, and are too long, but you get the picture. More mock-up pics later.

That bike is looking awesome, I am kind of jealous. The stance in the third picture looks great. I think the SL70 tank might be the way to go now. What is your plan for the seat?

Just put this nasty old seat on and ran the fork tubes a little higher to see what it looks like with a lower front end. Gonna do a spring seat with a fairing.

Some pics with the clip-on bars. Now I have some decisions to make as far as tank, bars, and pipe. Probably a low pipe. Sorry about how dark some of the pics are.
