CT117: Davmo's 1977 Honda CT70 Dax Custom Cafe build thread Monkey bike

Recently have had some requests for info on this build. The bike in my avatar picture. I got a hold of the donor bike when I did some restoration work for a friend on his SL70. In exchange he gave me two roached-out 1977 CT70's. I still have one of them sitting in the garage partially dismantled. The other one had a 1970 "H" engine in it that I later rebuilt for a different bike. A lot of parts on the bike were missing, and even more got swiped to use on other builds. Eventually, there was just this frame, and it was shoved up under a table for a couple of years. Tried giving it away to a couple guys, but nobody was interested. So somewhere around the middle of 2008, I was looking at some scrap pieces of handlebars (from a Z50 and SL70) left over from a couple other builds, and figured I could make some clubman style bars out of them. The bars got made with no definite bike in mind, but as you can see, one thing leads to another. Got the basic bike constructed over the next few months, then it got torn down, and a lot of the custom features were added. Other bikes were being built at the same time, so this one kept getting put aside. Somewhere in 2010, got serious about finishing up, and was done by early 2011. Pictures of the early process.

Some more. Here most of the features are in place, but not refined. The steering stabilizer mount was two separate pieces originally. An intake manifold out of copper that ended up getting scrapped. The first brake pedal, that i disliked and later scrapped. The curvey kickstarter that got replaced later.

Moving along, this was in 2009, the bike has been mocked up once, then disassembled for more detail work. Picture of the seat pan and gas filler ring in place. Those holes in the back of the seat pan are for the rubber seat bumpers that are on the bottom of the seat. Starting to form the aluminum torque plates on the lower portion of the frame. You can see the brake pedal pivot post has been cut off, but a portion is still left between the two sides of the frame. In the next picture, the rod has been cut out, and replaced with a piece of angle steel. Some more gussets and a place for the lower fender mount have been added. There is a bolt-in lattice-type brace that runs up the back channel of the frame. The top shock mount and cross-brace have been made. Pictures of the engine cradle, centerstand and swinger in place. This last pic is a good view the "duck-tail" appearance of the frame.

...And some more. The duck tail just after a piece has been welded in to cover the middle of the frame. The original lower fender mount bracket was salvaged to make the upper fender mount (the three holes toward the bottom of the first pic, two screw holes with a hole for the wires to pass through in between.) Found a pic of the friend's SL70 that i traded work for the donor bike. The 4 seat mount holes at the rear of the frame, with a 1/4" plate beneath the front two, to thread the screws into. The engine cradle by itself. The lower part of the frame, where sheet metal has been added to make it smooth. There is a place in the frame where the CT's have a step on this lower portion, making for an uneven place to mount the torque plates, so it had to be evened out. You can also see the mounting holes for the torque plates drilled into the frame. Some of the holes then had a small piece of 1/8" plate welded in behind them to be threaded for the mounting screws.

The frame and parts getting finished. All the parts get a lot of fine sanding and leveling prior to going to the chrome shop. Summer of 2010, bunches of bikes getting paint. Since then, I only paint two bikes at a time, max! The frame sitting on the shelf for a few weeks, curing.

Some chrome stuff waiting to go on, and some of the parts you don't see. There is a copper catch-can buried in the neck tube. The tap off the valve cover and from the rear vent both feed into it. At the time, I couldn't find another good vessel that would fit in there, and I had some thin copper, and have done lots of soldering before, so I went with it. The bottom of the tank needed to be bobbed to fit past the cross-brace. Although the cross-brace is removable, I wanted to be able to get at the electronics a little easier too. The electronics are mounted on a plate made to box the lower portion of the frame between the motor mounts an swingarm pivot.

The both of you^^^^ got me to do it. Thanks, it has been fun looking up these pictures. Random build pictures. The one picture is from my brother-in-laws neighbors property in western Oklahoma. He has a motion-sensor camera near his deer feeder, and it got this picture a couple years back. Has zero to do with minibikes, just found it while I was looking for minibikes.
