    1997 Z50R 88cc Spec Class Minimoto Racer

Just picked up a 97' Z50R in a trade for a KLX110 project I had laying around in pieces. I'm building it into a spec class racer for a mininmoto race series at a indoor kart track we have in my area of Michigan. Pretty much the only thing that will remain OEM is the gas tank, fork tubes, frame, and body. I never really knew these bike existed before seeing a fellow racers 89' Z50R. I fell in love with the way it looked instantly. The guy that rides that Z50R is probably the 2nd fastest person there. The only guy faster is on a full BBR MM12p. My KLX110 open class race bike's motor blew(currently building a 194cc stroker Takegawa 4V), and I wanted something to fit into the 88cc class. There will be a lot more guys in that class, so it'll be a lot of bar rubbing going on, haha.

I'm going for a replica look of the late 80's CR500 supercross factory bikes. Eventually the bike will be torn all the way down to have the frame and fork tubes powder coated red. That will probably be this summer.

    The parts list so far....
    TB 88cc V2 full kit
    TB 1.5" extended swingarm
    TB 1" extended fork legs
    TB extend brake cable
    TB red plastics
    TB oil cooler
    TB HD clutch kit
    TB high flow oil pump
    Blue seat cover
    Yoshimitsu 280mm shocks
    Earlier version 4 bolt hubs/brakes
    Kitaco 3.5" x 8" Aluminum Gold wheels
    Heidenau K75 Tires
    Pro-Circuit T-4 exhaust
    Pro-Taper Mini Bars
    Fast50s red top clamp
    Fast50s HD fork springs
    Fast50s black skid plate
    Takegawa coil
    Takegawa CDI/Rev box
    NGK spark plug wire
    Sano throttle
    Boyesen ignition cover
    Sik50 extended brake pedal
    IMS extended shifter
    KMS kill switch

Thanks guys! I'm super excited for this bike to be done! Way cheaper to build this than my KLX110 too, lol.

I think this is the last of all the parts I ordered... I usually loose track of what I all have coming when I buy all of it at once, lol.

Lovely. Good choice on the fork legs and bushing. Order a new set of "anti-wobble" bushings/collar for where the top of the legs meet to springs. Cheap and make such a difference.

Also, don't be surprised if that extended rear brake arm that came with your swinger is too long. I recently installed a similar one and the arm (or whatever you call it...prob not arm) was WAY too long. Had to cut it down and weld it up shorter.

66Cooper: Luckily the fork legs came with the new updated collars. Thanks for he heads up on the brake rod. I'll be messing with that tonight.

lepa: I'm not exactly sure. Maybe 10hp?

Where did you get the brake drums from? Interested in price vs quality.

If you are running drums on a fast bike, it's all about maximizing whacha got. Get THE best non-fade race pads you can and maybe even a takegawa extended arm for the front. The more leverage the better. As you use more fronts then rear, i'd use the longer of the two brake arms on the front...if that short one will fit on rear.

When you install, only hand tighten the axle nut, then pull the brake on hard, zip tie or have someone hold it there and tighten up the axle nut. You also want the brake arm to be as near to perpendicular to the cable when fully pulled, without going over. That gives best leverage.

I'm still rocking drum and after doing these simple things (and sourcing a nos hub to replace my whipped one), the braking is soooo much better

Yep, I'm digging it too. Cool wheel set. Nice parts selection too.
These guys do custom number plate backgrounds for our z50r's even w/ your number: discontinueddecals.com. I can vouch for their product. I got a set and am happy.
If you have to cut your brake rod for fitment, you can always add a fancy clevis to the end. Works better than a bent rod (doesn't wallow out) and looks the zzzzzz to boot.
    Keep posting up, I'm watching.

I bought them from CHP. Around $100 for the full front and rear setup.

    Thanks for the heads up.
