    Z50, Gorilla 150 and Franken Gorilla -- 3 builds

Working on a few projects, figured I'd have some questions so wanted to officially join the forum, but have looked around here from time to time.

Project 1: Z50 Monkey that I build in while I was in high school. I was living in Japan and wanted one but couldn't afford it. An old family friend mechanic had found the frame in the garbage, so the project started from there. I pieced it together over a few months and ended up with a pretty normal looking Monkey. When I graduated HS and moved back to the states I gave it to the mechanic. He kept if in his show room for the past 10+ years, and when I moved back to Japan several years ago he gave it back to me. It's a standard Z50 spec... I want to keep it pretty much as it was when I built it back then for sentimental reasons, but will be doing a light restore, and maybe a bore up kit at some point.. we'll see. For now it is half way disassembled and been put on the backburner while the other two projects take up most of my already limited spare time.

Project 2: This project started as the restoration on project 1. A friend gave me a new 150 Dirtmax engine, so I thought it would be cool to try it out on the Monkey. Sized it up, and wasn't comfortable with the clearance between the head and the front tire. So I got a new aluminum frame that was 2" longer than the original. Extended aluminum mono-shock rear swing arm, and disk brakes for front and back. Then realized the brakes only work with 10" wheels.. so I'd also need new wheels. At this point, I looked at what I had and realized I should just keep the original as it was, and finish this second project to have something a bit different. This will have a gorilla tank, QR50 seat, and 10" wheels. This bike still needs quite a few parts, and I've been neglecting it recently while working on project 3. I don't necessarily want to paint over the aluminum because once assembled it will not be as flashy, but in general I dislike chrome, which this kinda looks like at the moment. Debating if I will paint the engine black, but with all the fins probably hard to get good coverage. Anyone have experience with this?

Project 3: The Frankengorilla is a project I'm building for my cousin. Always more fun to ride with someone. He had a Monkey Deluxe back in high school when I had my Z50, and we used to ride around getting into trouble. His was ruined in the 2011 Tsunami that hit northern Japan. So I convinced him to get another one, and that turned into me building this one. It's a standard Z50 frame that has been extended and modified to accept an NSR80 front fork assembly. It also has the NSR80 rear mono-shock swingarm assembly, 12" wheels and front and rear Brembo disk brakes. It has a gorilla tank and a QR50 seat.. The clashing colors drive me crazy, but for now we'll live with that until it's up and running.. It has a new 125cc engine.

I guess I can't post pictures in my first post.. will add those in when I'm able.

    Thanks for reading,
    Isaac

I appreciate it! I may check that out. For now I can't even keep that link in my response due to the rules of the forum.

Picking up project 1. Barely fit in the car!

My nephew thought it was about his size

Took in apart for an inspection

    The 50 by the 150

Tried the 150 out, realized it was a bit tight, even with the 8" wheels

So put the 50 back on and left pretty much like this for the time being. Going to use a Z50 US style seat instead of the larger Japan Monkey style ones that I had back in the day. Will modify the rear slightly to run a bit cleaner w/o the rack and longer fender... but more or less keep it how it was when I built it 13+ years ago...

Good eye, yup it's an R32, I'm somewhat of a VW nut. Located in Tokyo now, been here for 11 years or so, on and off.

    Project 3: The Frankengorilla

This thing is kinda pieced together from a bunch of different bikes, but hope it works out alright...

The carb was super tight to the frame.. and the choke knob wasn't clearing the fuel petcock so may look for a different type.. we'll see. For not I notched the choke pull knob.

That's some crazy stuff there. Makes me want to find a custom project after my ct70 resto. Nice work!
